OMG have you priced the hatch struts on a Mazda5?!

So the passenger's side hatch strut on my '08 has been making moaning sounds since we bought it. Yesterday it finally blew out with a hiss and is totally dead. Unfortunately it just passed 40K and was at 37K when we bought the van.

I stopped by the dealer to check the price and those struts are $90 each!!! That's more than the suspension struts! I'm sure they are specific to the Mazda5/Premacy which is part of the issue.

Is there any way to get one of these struts cheaper? Online OEM parts source?

That's actually not that bad. The hatch struts for my Elantra GT were north of $100 - I think it was $120 - and they both gave out after five years of Minnesota winters, so rather than spending $240 to replace them I used an old paint roller extension pole to prop the hatch open. Turned out to be wise as a distracted driver broadsided me just six months later and now I have a 5 with two working hatch struts!

It's sad to look at the markup on some of these items. We used to use a nearly identical gas spring on some equipment we make and ordered them from Suspa in Michigan. http://www.suspa.com/index.php?id=512

They were about $6 each. See if the spring shows the force on it. Probably listed in newton/meters. I won't be back home near my 5 until this weekend to check.

Check with your local junk yards. You might find a used one on the cheap. eBay might also yield results.

Rodslinger I'll check that site out. The markup on any car parts is rediculous, especially stuff like hatch struts, belts and hoses, etc.. I used to work for NAPA auto parts, the mark up was usually 100%. I'm also away from home and can't look at the struts themselves so if anyone can see the numbers that would be helpful!

I'll also check out the parts websites you guys posted. My wife may not have the patience for me to order from Suspa.

I've just checked. Unfortunately they only show the brand, an L or an R for the side ID, and the lot numbers.

Brand: Showa
Left: C27I06
Right: C17I10

I say it is lot numbers, not part numbers, because the 06 has completely different ones.

One of the 06's was replaced under warranty, but I'm afraid I no longer have the service order :(

Oh wow. My kid just pulled down the rear hatch via the rear strut... which sorta worked... until it bent.

I bent it back, but not it has another 'preset' when opening.:(
