Well?! (poke)

Oh! And; I'm not interested in hearing sorry ass excuses about traffic, or the hilly streets of San Francisco. You bought Proteges (at least; I think you did), because you are DRIVERS!! You want to take control. By God! You will choose the gears, when you want to choose the gears! You want to feel in control!

You look at driving as fun, a sport (I don't care if you race or not).

I will add; this does not really apply to Mercedes Benz SLs, Larger MBs, or larger BMWs or other larger sedans, that only offer Tiptronic type Autosticks.

not that this car is a SPORTS car, but i dont see the point in driving ANY "fun" car in an automatic, it takes a lot of the fun out of it...plus no turbo!

Sports car, Sports Sedan,,,, most of us know that the 'sedans' are the ones with 4 doors.

Damn right Matthew!! You know what I am talking about! How's the Turbo install going? (better you than me!!!)

I originally leased an automatic and used the excuse that I sit in traffic to get to work. (took 45 minutes to get 8kms on a highway). Well 6 months later, I passed the auto on to my b/f and got a 5spd.

autos are boring, and all the talk about traffic...whatever...i dont sit in rush hour traffic all day but i do do a LOT of stop and go traffic and i DO have to sit in line every time i enter the post...and i never get pissed that i have a standard tranny...im so used to driving a stick that 1) it FEELS like a automatic because its become second nature. 2) i put my left foot against the dead pedal looking for the clutch on my wife's truck when i occaisionally drive it...

turbo install is fun and im having a great time!

thought I'd throw my two cents in here...proteges are slow...i'll wait until I get a BMW when I'm older

I test drove a Pro and like it, but it was an auto and told the salesman I wanted a stick because it is much more fun to drive. All the P5s on the lot were autos, but they were a little out of my price range any way so got a ES manual instead. I would get an auto if it were a Truck or SUV, but as for my sedan, I opted for a stick.

Slow? Let me tell you about slow. My 1976 FIAT 124 Spider. But; it had a 5 speed manual, and it was great! What a blast to drive.

MGs
Triumphs
.....all slower than a standard Protege - but what fun! (thumb)

Speed has nothing to do with enjoying driving with a manual transmission.

And yeah! My wife's ES is a 5 speed. She wouldn't have it any other way. (drive)

No offense Matt, but seriously.......you live in OK!! Try stop and go in LA, or NYC, or like me in the tourist capital of the World!!

Yes, I drive the sportronic. Every car I have owned previously was a manual. I still own a '97 Avenger in Manual. And yes, overall I prefer a manual. But reality check is this, HOW you drive your car should determine what tranny you need.

No offense to this thread, but it's an instant slam on all non-manuals out there. Who would WANT to vote so they can get slammed? Seriously, one of the best modded cars on this forum was Pirana, and yet I don't read s*** about his Auto, b/c he had a badass car, regardless of the tranny.

Sorry to get so......defensive.......but it seems there is just as much nagging and (poke) on this forum about Man/Auto as there is about MSP/P5's.

My 2 cents down the drain......

hey now!!!!

dont be putting OK down.. :p lol in Tulsa we actually have A LOT of traffic. I used to live in Orlando, and I know how bad it can be. (I-4 in a rainstorm, etc.) but Tulsa isn't really far behind that at times. in fact Tulsa has two of the most dangerous and heavily trafficed intersections in the country. #5 and #6. ( http://www.statefarm.com/di/danlist00.htm ) and they are 2 miles apart. that stretch of road is rediculous when it gets bad

Every car I've ever owned has had a manual transmission. I really like a stick and would never own anything else. I enjoy shifting and like knowing that the manual is more mechanically efficient than the auto resulting in more wheel HP and better fuel mileage. I especially like shifting when going through the twisties and doing some spirited cornering. I admit it's a PITA when driving in heavy traffic but I'm willing to put up with that since that represents a minority of my driving time.

The mazda was my first manual, I learned how to drive on a brand new car (only to get the clutch replaced a few months later). I just installed my short shifter and now Im totally in love with my car. Shes not nearly as fast as the rx7 but still as fun to drive with a stick. I had to drive an auto when I had the Murano for my rental when the car was in the shop and I'll admit I was spoiled, I didnt have to worry about shifting so I amuzed myself in the car with the steering wheel controls, the bose audio system and the power EVERYTHING...looking back I kind of miss the ol murano. But I will admit some cars are better of as autos and others as sticks. Like our NISMO Z, they arent that great of a car, but damn I had fun driving it.

I wanted to get a stick when I bought my ES, but they gave me the Auto (with "sport mode") for a better price. I paid $15,300 which was a good deal then for an ES.

I'll have this car paid off in 9 months, then I'm getting something in a stick - lately the Crossfire has been catching my interests, but who knows.
