Oil in TIP...Bad?!?

So i changed my TIP and the stock plastic pipe had oil on the turbo end. And the turbo had a litle oil residue on it...So is that bad? Normal? Or no big deal??

The last pic shows where i broke that DAMN NIPPLE!!! CRAP! Hope it doesnt have to go back on...Ill have to super glue it back on...
 
I have seen them but never really understood them... Why does it not come with one? What does it do? Obviosly catches oil but where and why is there oil to be caught?
 
In a nutshell, you're venting pressure from one part of the engine to another (PCV; or Positive Crankcase Ventilation). Sometimes an oil or sludge residue comes with that and is cycled back into the intake to be burned up during combustion. It's the lowest maintenance approach because there is no can to empty every month. However, it is not the most efficient approach.
 
Semi normal...

I know on my last car my 1.8t Beetle there was a ton of oil in the intercooler piping and the turbo was fine as well as the motor.. But I had some PCV issues that I had to fix

It won't hurt anything. This design (the PCV system) has been out for the better part of a century. You will have gunk build-up at a faster rate without one than you would if you installed one. Keep that in mind.

By using a catch can you're preventing the recirculation of oil, condensate, and other contaminants back into the combustion chamber. When they are burned up in the combustion chamber, they leave a heavy film deposit on the face of the piston, valves, and valve seats. The deposit is a byproduct of burning that oil/sludge and will cause your valves to "gum up". Regular oil changes will not prevent that and have nothing to do with that.
 
It will help keep your car running well and is a small price to pay considering the alternatives.

I'm actually looking to pick one up soon. I've been looking for one with a level indicator on the side and a drain plug on the bottom. The drain on the bottom is a must because you don't want to have to pull the tank every time you want to empty it.

It wouldn't have completely eliminated it, but would have limited the amount recirculated back into the intake. There will still be gases and particulates that won't be caught by the catch can (as funny as that sounds). The only way to completely eliminate it is to run that into a breather or filter, but eventually that filter will become saturated and will just let loose all over your engine bay. A catch can is higher maintenance than just a full recirculation PCV system (i.e. you have to empty it), but is much less a pain in the ass than spraying that gunk all over the engine bay. It has to go somewhere, so why not burn it?

EDIT: After looking at your pics. Mine wasn't that bad. On the Tube itself was just some residue. I didn't have any build up on the actual inlet. It had a problem with cutting out. But It was also due to my clamp being completely stripped and loose. Bought a new clamp and it runs perfect right now.
