It wouldn't have completely eliminated it, but would have limited the amount recirculated back into the intake. There will still be gases and particulates that won't be caught by the catch can (as funny as that sounds). The only way to completely eliminate it is to run that into a breather or filter, but eventually that filter will become saturated and will just let loose all over your engine bay. A catch can is higher maintenance than just a full recirculation PCV system (i.e. you have to empty it), but is much less a pain in the ass than spraying that gunk all over the engine bay. It has to go somewhere, so why not burn it?
