Oil found in catch can

So, I was cleaning up the engine this weekend and wanted to drain the oil catch can and found a good amount of oil in it, it was almost full. Last time I checked the can it was pretty much empty and the car smoked after about 10-15 minutes at idle but it's been smoking a lot more lately after about 5 minutes. It's a lot better after the clean up.

Wicked... That's like, cleaning your ears and finding a bunch of yellow on the Q-tip.... very satisfying!

One thing you might try is packing your catch can with something that will catch and filter the blow-by. For instance, Perrin uses little foam rings to catch the oil and water vapor. You can also use copper scrour pads or a brillo pad... just make sure it won't break apart. Also, as the can gets full, there is less space for the oil vapor to accumulate, so the can becomes less effective as it gets full.

it does if the root of your smoking is from an inadequate PCV valve. For most the addition of a catch can and using 5w40 oil will eliminate smoking, at least it has for me (knock on wood) for the last 6 months. also not overfilling the oil as well, use only 5.5qts instead of 6qts.

What brand name of oil do you use?

Looks like lots of water with a little oil...

in colder weather you will get a lot of water in the oil catch can do to condensation from the heating and cooling it endures so it must be emptied more frequently but as the temperature warms up you will notice less water and more fuel/oil. either way as long as it keeps it from going into your intake manifold.

you can get shell rotella t-syn at walmart for about $19 a gallon.

i dont like mobil 1 but pennzoil is ok.

mobil 1 is garbage..IMHO.. i was looking at that shell stuff bova tonight at wal-mart u ever try it?? if not what brand of 5w-40 r u running or would suggest to run.. im running pennzoil plat 5w-30 right now..

Mobil 1 has been noted to be at the bottom of the 'synthetic oil' category. There are plenty of oils for the same price that are a higher quality.

Do you guys have any data to back this up? I've always used Mobil1 with no issues, and don't want to change without some data to back it up. At the same time, if I am using, as you say, "garbage", I need a reason to stop using it.
