Went to Pep Boys today...got me some 10W 30 Mobil 1...some ramps...and looked into OIL filters...but I didn't know what to get. I DON'T wanna go with a FRAM...I hear bad things about them...what does everyone here use?

Also, where are our oil filters located?

I use K&N filters or Mazda OEM filters. The filter is located on teh back of the block towards the firewall just above the exhaust piping to the right if you are looking under the car.

I was told by everyone to use OEM fitlers, honda, subaru, VW, Ford, Toyota guys.... they all said the same to me use OEM oil filters you can't go wrong. Those are the best quality over those Fram and others.

As for the location. It's directly above your oil pan look up and you should see it there... it's about 1/2 way from the oil pan to your head of your engine. If you haven't changed your oil filter yet it should be a white filter from Japan. Otherwise if your dealer did it, it will be blue.

Hope this helps.

BTW if you get a fitted plastic cap to remove your filter, and still have the OEM from Japan... good luck they are high capacity filters and are larger in size then the replacements from Mazda.

I am not sure what Jc's is talking about.....the filters that came on both of my p-5's were black....FROM the factory.....just like the OEM replacements I purchased at the dealer....and they were the EXACT same size as the one that came on the car from the factory.

On my MP3 I used the Mobil1 filter. Damned expensive at $12, so I'll probably go back to OEM. I'll still use full synth though.

So I can just get an OEM from the dealer? How much? How much are K&N's?

And I have to be UNDER the car to change the OIL filter?? Odd.

well...you have to be under the car to change the oil...so it would make sense to change the oil filter while you're down there.

My filter was bigger in capacity size. I wish I would of kept it for comparison but I didn't. The two where different sizes, but the connector at the end was the exact same size, jsut he diametre of it was slightly bigger.

OEM in Canada is $8 a filter. so about $5-6 for you guys....

Hey guys trust me a filter is a filter. As for synthetic oil that's the stuff i hear bad things about.

Bad things about?? Wondering what you have heard?? Have you ever used any synthetics?? I have had excellent results using synthetics. I have heard peoples horror stories, but when you look into thier claims, they usually have beaten and neglected the cars, and put in synthetics when a problem develops using petro based thinking that synthetics will help. I used Synthetics in my old Chevy 3.1, started using them at 70k miles, and put on another 70k, the last 20k was on the same oil change. The car ran like a top theday I drove it to trade it in, I just wanted out of my old 92 gas guzzler to a new fuel efficient sportier car. I have been using AMSoil synthetic in my car for a little over a mointh now, and the car runs so quiet, it's incredible.

Just wondering what kind of bad things you heard?? Let us in!

Just for reference, a filter is not a filter. They are not all equal.
Now, if you're gonna change it every 2000-3000 miles, yeah, they're all gonna be pretty equal. You start autocrossing and such and changing it every 5000+ miles, no, they're not equal. Buy quality. There are different prices and brands for a reason.
It's like saying a car is a car. Are you gonna put a Yugo and a Bentley in the same category? I don't think so.
