i fukin hate where mazda place the oil filter on the P5..........it takes forever to get it off. there is no easy way to do it........and not pay for it.

i jack it up, but i can't grasp the filter for s***. it took about 1hr 10 minutes to get oil and change it this morning. i've changed my oil in the P5 about 5 times so far and it has never been an easy process. it's never taken this long, but i still hate doing it because i know it'll be a hassle.

Well I dont know what you are doing, the only problems I had the frist time was finding a filter wrench that fit the little bugger

get one of those oil filter "tools" its like a little loop that will tighten around it... goto an autozone and ask for one. it'll make it easier IF the place you took it to put it on too tight.

us msp'ers got off easy... if you own a protege and dont have cruise controll, you can get the filter off with your bare hands, just reach down fron the top and get it...

If you have a 2002.5+ then I've read about some people taking off that cross member to get easy access to the filter. Or you can always look for a filter relocation kit too.

unless you happen to be a rather large person, which might make it a little more difficult to get under the car...this REALLY shouldn't be a big deal.....if you do your own oil changes....just make sure you don't over tighten the filter when YOU put it on...you should NEVER need a tool to put the filter on...it should always be put on by hand.....tighten it till the oring first touches the block, then one full turn further....and its easy enough to do by hand. then taking the thing off is a piece of cake. getting at it shouldn't be hard either...you are going to have to jack the car up to get to the drain plug anyway, just wiggle a little further under the car, reach up and snag that bad boy out.

(stash)

those belt style oil filter wrenches suck for the most part IMO. I'd get a socket tool that fits on the end of the oil filter and do it that way. Just remember to tighten it with only your hands when putting it back on.

I've mentioned this before but get the K&N filters. they have a 1" socket end to them so you can use a socket wrench to get them off. much much easier than trying to contort your arm up into that tiny space. like always those who design cars don't fix/work on them. if they did then you'd have no prblems ever fixing a car.

HP-1008 have to use the "-" mark when searching for the "hp-1008"

they are very handy. (yippy) only they run an average 0f $10 seen them as low as 9.....if you like them buy in bulk to get free shipping. Us diesel parts(found through the KN website resellers page doesnt charge shipping on orders over 25$)

use the hp-1010, its the larger one from the v6 probe...

i have yet to find someone to stock the 1008 but they all have the 1010

I change my own oil. It's a piece of cake. I go to the dealer to buy the Mazdaspeed oil filter and I use Royal Purple. I can see having a problem if you have big hands, but thankfully I can get around the top and bottom of my engine pretty easily since I have small hands. No tools were needed except for the pan.

fram sure grips are the way to go, lucky for me I'm a tech for GM and have the use of a lift.

I wouldn't use a Fram oil filter if I were you. We cut one in half in my auto shop class a few years back and the filter element was pretty weak. Unless they've changed the design of their oil filters in the past couple of years, they're junk.

wierd. i tighten my by hand, and loosen by hand as well. granted it takes some grunting, but i found it was better to bust a knuckle or two rather than try to get that stupid oil filter wrench up there. i take the cross member off though. btw i have pretty big hands (or so my gf says), so i dunno what th eproblem is. dont use a impact wrench to put the filter on next time.

Don't tighten it too much in the first place, and use sandpaper when you go to take it off, and it comes free. Should just relocate the filter, though, if you don't like crawling underneath. =)

I change my oil every 3000mile or 3months, so its pretty frequent. I dont think they were that poorly designed, because why would they sell them.
