oil filter differences?

What are the differences between the OEM 302 and the 302A filters? I read something about flow rate differences with respect to engine starting temp, years ago. Any positive links or information. Guesses & opinions don't count here. Ed

You know Ed, often times when a manufacturer supersedes a part number (say from 302 to 302A), they do it for arcane administrative reasons that may have nothing to do with the part or its design/construction. My guess is that's probably what you're looking at here as not much happens in the world of OE oil filters. Could be something as simple as a different supplier building to same spec as previous one.

thanks dergibog. That was the Mazda information I was looking for. All my locally bought filters were the 302A and when looking to buy a 6 pack of OEM filters, I saw the were 302s and remembered there was a difference but, didn't remember the detail. Ed

A different (but related) tidbit that CX-5 owner's who plan to buy 3rd party filters should be aware of is this:

Mazda specifies a different filter for the Skyactiv engines vs. some earlier, non-Skyactiv engines. Both filters have the same dimensions and will physically mate to either engine but the filter for Skyactiv engines has a significantly different bypass pressure. But here's the problem: Some 3rd party filter manufacturer cross reference the same filter to either engine.

So beware if buying non Mazda filters (which I don't know why anyone would want to with the low price and high quality of the OEM filters).

Good to know. I have been using all-OEM parts for my Mazda's motor simply because it is a unique creature. Mazda Moly oil, Mazda filters.
