Oil and ATF question

Hey Guys!

New to the forum and am admittedly a total noob when it comes to doing maintenance. (Tired of paying through the nose for maintenance.) So, be patient if you can...I'm going to ask some pretty obvious questions..well, not obvious to me ;-)

I'm doing an oil change and ATF change on my '02 protege5(Yellow) I was reading a how to about changing the transmission fluid and am a bit confused.

If you add tranmission fluid through the ATF dipstick, it should go to the transmission, right? Is is possible for it to get into the oil pan? Because i think that may be where it's going. I've looked at the manual and i've looked through the forum and i honestly cant find pictures of the ATF plug on a protege 5 vs. the oil plug on a protege 5.

I appreciate some people are going to advise me to have a pro do it, but I really want to learn to do this myself.

Also, I'm a bit confused about what weight of oil I should get. There seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions...synthetic, etc.. 3.7 quarts vs. 4.

Anyway, if you could help a guy out..I'd really appreciate it.

All the best
Mish

Yes, you add the ATF at the dipstick point which is located on the DS of the engine bay, just to the left of the battery and is red. The oil is added directly at the engine (where the oil cap is located on top of the valve cover). The oil dipstick, used to check the oil level, is at the top left of the valve cover (when looking at it) and is yellow.

The oil pan/plug on the underside of the car is on the PS and the transmission plug is on the DS.

Manual recommends 10w30 oil and entirely up to you on using conventional (dino) or synthetic. What mileage is on the car now and do you know if it was ever run with syn? If not, I'd just keep using conventional and call it a day.

As for amounts, 3.7qts is the total to fill when using an oil filter for the Protege5, i.e.: Bosch part# 3300. You can use 4qts when you use an oil filter for a 2001 Mazda 626 with a V6 engine, i.e.: Bosch part# 3323.
