I've been installing a carPC in my Mazda. I took out the center console over a month ago. I put the center console back in and moved the car in to the street two weeks ago. Last night I go to start it and the battery is dead. No biggie, so I jumped it. Perfect. I get in and go to shift it into gear and no go. WTF! POS!

So today I do the same thing. No go. I take out the center console. Nothing is touching the area around the shifter in the least bit. Still no shifting out of Park. So I see a little white clip to the right of the shifter like a release latch with a spring. If I pull up the release it allows me to shift in to reverse and I can let go and shift into D, use the tabby clutch, shift back in to N if I want but I need to pull the latch again to shift in to reverse.

What could be wrong with my car? Could a dead battery be doing this?

sOUNDS LIKE YOU TRIPPED THE SHIFT LOCK OUT TO ME. NO BIGGIE

check your fuses, under your dash, mainly check the radio fuse. my radio fuse blew and it locked my shifter like yours. also it only engaged 3rd gear safe mode. i dunno if you're having that problem. i also had a tiptronic so it might be different.

Where can I find info about this? The car was purchased used so it didn't come with a manual.

Yes, my trans is locked in 3rd gear when I move into the tabby clutch so its the same problem you had. Was the fuse the solution to your problem?

I've checked all of the mini fuses but none of them are blown (I used a fuse tester). Any other ideas?

yes strangely changing out the fuse fixed my problem. i had actaully had it at 2 dealers to look at it. and the solution they had was to replace the whole tranny. i have a turbo so my warranty was void so i said **** that. at the same time that my tranny was ****** my radio didn't have power either. changed the fuse and it fixed my radio and my tranny. i have no freakin clue how they are related but i counted my blessings and never ****** with it again.

it seems to me that this is some how related to your carputer. what sorta splicing and cutting did you do to the stock wiring?

None at all. I had a car audio place put in a amp. They put it in the back of the car.

I had them put a terminal block in the rear for power. I simply removed the head unit. The computer is disconnected fully so that can't be the problem. Like I said, everything has been working fine and then I park it in the street, leave it two weeks, and bam, it wont go in to gear (and its stuck in to 3rd).

I checked all of the small fuses under the dash, all tested ok (I even replaced the radio one for a try) and then all of the small ones under the hood. Everything tested ok. There are alot of bigger fuses I couldnt test under the hood so maybe its one of those. I bought an extended warranty for the car and the ded. is $100 so its not that bad of a deal to take it in to the dealership.

I just can't picture what could have happened.

well if you have an extended warranty i suggest you take everything not stock out and have them look at it. i wouldn't even know where to start to try and figure this one out

{quasi-jack}what are you using for your C-PC?? (car-PC){/jack}

maybe start a new thread on that perhaps

press the brake pedal

Although this is an obvious thing I wouldn't put it past some to have missed that, but thats not the problem. The tail lights do light up when you press the brakes but I don't hear the normal sound of the electronic release for the brakes.

Is this something your intrested in finding out? I can provide more information to you but right now I just want my car to work so PM me if you want the info.

Update, I drove it in to the dealership. The Check Engine light came on on the way there and then the AT trans light kept flashing.

To top if off, the tabby clutch no longer shows the gears. I got it in there and the tech said it doesnt sound like a fuse. They've only seen it a few times, usualy something to do with the trans linage or something. BAH!

My car has 90,255 miles and my extended warranty runs out at 95,800. Good thing! I should kick myself because I was going to trade my P5 in and get a Mazda 3 5 door but my "better" half didnt want me to.

final conclusion?

I'm having the same issue, what was final outcome? i sent you a PM slash. hope you can help

there's a hole on top right of shifter console, take the cap off and push the button, that will release the shifter
