Official 2014 CX-5 Press Release

wow, I wish I hadn't read that. The mpg drop for the 2.5 is minimal and the new bluetooth features sound handy.

"When a smartphone is connected, Short Message Service (SMS) messages can be received and shown on the touch screen monitor. The system can then articulate the messages as well as allow users to send replies using fixed phrases. A new speech recognition system also allows users to repeat and shuffle audio tracks as well as search and select folders. "

"Touting 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm, the CX-5 becomes one of the more powerful non-turbocharged compact SUVs in its class. The EPA-tested numbers reflect minimal sacrifice in efficiency with 25 city/32 highway MPG for front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles and 24 city/30 highway MPG for AWD vehicles. "

I guess I have gotten to drive mine 19,000 miles already and you could probably wait forever to get a car if you keep waiting for the 'next big improvement'. :)

I guessed the weight with the 2.5L would come in around 3,526lb, so I was pretty close! :) (For use in weight to power calcs). I'm quite glad that I waited, as the 2.0L pushing 3,426lbs was just not doable up here in Colorado.

I love that the 2.5L engine hits its peak torque around 3,250 RPM, as most competitors are around 4,000 or higher. It's going to be a very tough decision for me between the '14 Forester and '14 CX-5 2.5L... I wish I could drive them both now :P

I may be reading this incorrectly, but does this suggest that the 2.5L isn't an option on Touring/Grand Touring trims, but rather standard? That would be great :).

The SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission are standard fare on Touring models.

I hope they improved the voice recognition algorithms for the head unit.

Really wish they had included pricing info. But thank you very much for posting.

Yeah, I'm curious about price too. I hope it's significantly more expensive so that I wouldn't have considered it. I'll be very disappointed if it still would have been in my price range. I would LOOOOOOOVE the 2.5.

Well I was considering a BMW X1 at over $40K before the debut of the CX-5. After a test drive in the X1, I don't see any issue with paying a premium for the CX-5 with the 2.5L. All indications are that it will only be $1000-$1500 more than the 2013 2.0L

That's what I'm reading into this and it kind of makes sense. They would have the Sport edition that remains with the 2.0L and offers a 6MT as an entry level price leader. The Touring & GT trims are upgrades and mostly are ordered with auto anyway. This is good for production efficiency and less decisions for the potential purchaser to make. I always quote Henry Ford when he said "They can have any color they want as long as it's black."

If I remember correctly the dealer told me the 2014 2.5L Grand Touring was $300-$500 more than 2013 2.0L. Given it is one model year newer the increase seems trivial. I would think it will be announced soon.

Wow, if the premium is that small, maybe I'll get 2! Funny (not like a clown) how some dealers have more information than others. I've mentioned in other threads that one of the dealers I've been speaking to when asked when the 2014 CX-5 w/2.5L will be available, I was told "2014".....

I don't care so much about the bigger engine, although it would have been nice. I can go plenty fast enough to get a speeding ticket with my 2.0 lol

However, I certainly hope that there is the possibility via firmware upgrade or something, to have our 2013 models updated to use the new SMS service and the shuffle/repeat setting hands-free. That is a feature I've really wanted as I had with my previous vehicle and I do miss it.

Ouch. That's pretty insulting to consumers who bought a premium model in 2013 (GT) and got the 2.0, then only a m/y later the 2.5l is standard on the premium models.

It honestly should have been an option from the get go.

I'm pretty complacent with the 2.0 in my Touring, though...
Don't see myself upgrading.

Mazda rushed it out the door with the 2.0L to stake their claim of "most fuel efficient yada-yada" and collect a model year's worth of sales until the 2.5L was ready to go IMO. (It was a good chance to test the waters, too) Anywhere but flat, low elevation areas this upgrade was desperately needed :) (Particularly for the A/T AWD models, which are MUCH heavier than the M/T FWD model) If it really is standard on the Touring/Grand Touring and we only see an incremental bump in price of $300-500, the 2014 CX-5 will make a very compelling case.

That's the price the early adopters pay to be the first on the block with the new toys.

"...Only available with an automatic transmission..."

Meh, no MT option with new engine.

I understand how you feel since I'll be coming out of a 6MT, which should be any driving enthusiast's transmission of preferrence. However, about a year after I took delivery my 6MT, my job location changed and I've been rowing the gears from stop light to stop light on my daily commute for the last 4 1/2 years. A slush box will be a welcome change for me!

I guess it is all relative but ours did better than any of the other 3 cars we've driven up and around Lake Tahoe (7000-9000 ft level). Granted none of our other cars were big engine ones either but still I didn't notice any time that the CX5 seemed to be running out of breath like our others would. I even passed a few people on those annoyingly short, uphill passing lanes they have.

Not that more HP is ever really a bad thing and I doubt it will help our resale values much if the 2.5s are about the same price when new but I'm still happy. Like I mentioned above I've played the "but look what is coming out in 6 months" game before and there is always something else to wait and see how good it is just around the corner.

Although..... If I get my wife to start driving my CX5 and she ends up liking it we could trade in her 3 on another 5 :)

Honestly, I would like the SkyA-G 2.5L in my fully loaded GT AWD w/tech since it is the heaviest of all CX-5's. Though I am not disappointed with the 2.0L since it does have adequate power and a good amount of usable torque. Could I use the 2.5L more for left lane passing, and short highway on-ramps? Yes. Would I like the 2.5L to not have the transmission downshift a gear or two for said maneuvers? Yes. Am I going to cry over it? No. If anything, people in similar driving environments like me have more to complain about. Living in metro NYC, I often have to do quick get up and go moves so I don't get rear ended by some asshole in a cabbie.

I am pleased with what I got, granted I've only had the CX-5 for three weeks or so. I was happy with it when I bought it, and still am. Hell to be honest, (as an avid Pandora user) I am more concerned about the lack of not having the Pandora app for the TomTom from the get-go! I do have a good feeling that it's only the matter of time before someone modifies the 2013 software to accept the Pandora app since it is merely a software update. Perhaps then I don't have to stream Pandora via bluetooth. The SCBS (SMart City Braking System) I don't care for what so ever.

With that said, I'll start crying when they release the SkyA-Diesel 2.2l in the CX-5 with its twin turbos, massive torque, and superior fuel efficiency. Then again, I have no reason to cry because the only reason I finance my CX-5 instead of buying it all out is because of the awesome 0.9% APR and the option to trade it in after a year with no penalties! I'll definitely be looking at what Mazda has to offer for 2015.

I really wonder how much of a difference the 2.5L will make. I found the test drive I did with the 2.0L to be fine, though it did totally power out at 130kmh. I finally got to 145kmh, but it took me an additional 20 minutes and a tail wind. Ok, it wasn't that bad ;)

The Dealer here in Regina told me about $1000 more for the 2014. We will see.
