how the hell? Test drive? Rental? Car Review magazine writer? lol (poke)
I have my ways...
I had the opportunity to experience the new 6 tonight, and I have to say, it's very impressive. As I mentioned earlier, the car was a 'Kona Blue' V6 GT, with (and I'm not sure how the options are packaged) Bluetooth, Bose stereo, Blind Spot Monitoring, 18" wheels, advanced keyless, leather, heated mirrors/seats, and a few other things I probably forgot.
EXTERIOR:
I'll start with the exterior. My first impression is that I really like this shade of blue. It's not a plain navy, but it's hard to explain. The overall fit of the front end is excellent. The panels look much tighter, giving the front end a much more flowing look. The headlamps and front end fit seamlessly together, and I absolutely love the fender flares on the front fenders. Very reminiscent of the RX-8. The headlamps themselves are impressive too. The turn signal is now on the 'bottom' of the lamp, and the high beam is tucked in the centermost portion. The lights at night are very unique, and their profile is sharp. One thing I didn't particularly care for was the silver garnish around the fog lights. There's a small silver strake that runs the length of the front bumper, and two trapezoidal silver surrounds with the strake ending inside of them. I think the fog surrounds would look better in black with the silver strake to match the rest of the bumper personally. Moving along the sides, the doors don't have any side sill bumpers, which help give the car a much smoother look. The C/D pillar area flows very nicely, and they finally got rid of the stupid stick antenna. The car flows better without this. Moving to the back, this car had the LED taillights which look great, and the other portions flow nicely. The trunk is nicely chiseled, and I'm not really sure how a spoiler would look on this. No key area, just a little touchpad under the 'M' to pop the trunk. The exhaust valences also look nice. Much better than on the MS6. Easier to clean too I would suspect.
INTERIOR:
Once I grabbed the key, I realized it's not like the MS6 advanced keyless entry. It's a longer, slimmer version of what the Protege/3 has, but much nicer. It has a raised 'M' on top, then the lock, unlock, trunk, and panic in a column. Key slides out the bottom when a lever is released. Opening up the doors, you hit the brake pedal and push start the car. The gauges light up in red, white and blue, and the message center says 'zoom-zoom'. The car is two tone; ivory and black. Instead of the faux woodgrain on some other models, this had a black 'wrapped bamboo' look to it. Unique, and it really fit the interior color well. The dash materials look like the old stuff, but are much softer. Leather seats aren't quite as bolstered as I'd like, and I don't care for the perf. leather in this; it's not a 1x1 dot pattern. It's more like 2x2 in a row, offset. The new steering wheel is nice, with bluetooth, volume, select, mode, cruise, and voice command functions right on it. The back seats were roomy, and being a 6'4'' guy, had some headroom and leg space in the back as well. One thing about the new car, the trunk is massive compared to the 1st gen. Room for more golf clubs, dead bodies, etc. Played with the Bluetooth too, and you can play music and call right from your phone. Aux jack is in the center console and can control iPod or phone through AUX button on radio. Easy to pair, displays right on screen. Not sure if steering controls work for phone music players.
DYNAMICS:
The 3.5 V6 fits this car well. Plenty of torque down low, and it never really gives up. The manu-matic mode is fun, and quick to respond. No real waiting for shifts unless you take it too high. Interior noise is much less than before, and on the freeway it cruises very well. Body roll was surprisingly minimal, I expected more. The steering is very crisp, responsive, and it takes turns well. Braking was firm, much like my MS6. For those of you wondering if the V6 is quicker than the MS6, I wouldn't worry too much. The car gets up and goes, but not like a speed. No need to worry...yet.
OVERALL:
I was extremely impressed with the car. I've read first drives and heard good things, and they were spot-on. The car is light years ahead of the first gen, and I'd definitely buy one over an Accord or Camry. I'd like to see it with a 6 speed manual, but we can only hope in 2010 that they might consider it.
My likes: steering feel, braking, interior quality, front fender/headlight design
Dislikes: awkward power driver seat adjustment, reverse is funny in the transmission gate, message center was farther away than in my car, no mute button on steering wheel.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
