OEM Navigation thoughts....

So im getting close to purchasing my speed3 and im on the line weather I should get it with the navigation, or without. If I got it without I would purchase a portable unit, but I really like the looks of the oem navigation from the MazdaUSA website. From what I can gather, its a pop up unit? If so, what are your thoughts on this and have you had any issues with it? Maybe some pic's and or vids of how this unit works would be sweet! Thanks for any help! (hear ya)

i have it and am happy with it, but it could be a better system. i went with it because its OEM and looks great. Its not touch screen (controls are up and to the right of the shifter) and it is motorized. You can't enter addresses on the move without soldering in a switch intercepting the speed sensor wire to the DVD unit.

your choice. I like having it.

If you dont mind me asking, what did you get your car for?

i love mine. It tells me everything I need, golf courses, resturants and direction. I like the OEM flip out and since I hooked it up with a DVD/TV combo also, I am getting everything from it and can't be happier!

Has anybody hacked this system so you can play DVD movies or hook up a tv tuner???

i've got both!

I have a dvd player bolted right below the stock navi in the glove. I also have a bypass switch below the driver's console (near the throttle on top) so I can switch between the nav and tv/dvd. There's alot a s-video just in case I want to plug in my Zen to watch other movies or videos

Can you tell me more about your setup?

What dvd/tv tuner did you use?
What did you hook it up to and what connections did you use?
How much did this cost you?
Is this something anybody can do or is this a job for the pro's?
Do you have pics of the setup?

I have a fahrenheit dvd player that is bolted below my factory navi.

I got this set up with the car when I got it so I am not sure, but I know that the shop used a bypass switch to connect the dvd/navi to the factory unit, so I can switch between navi and dvd anytime, while driving, and both can run at the same time.

How much did this cost you?
$1000 is the receipt I have, which comes with 5 years warranty

I really liked the way they install this. everything is hidden, the antenna is connected on the top of the windshield, but it's very small so you can barely see it. There's also another antenna similar to a gps connector located at the back window, and again, very hidden.

Do you have pics of the setup?

i'll try to get you some picture tomorrow when I have time.

again, i wouldn't spend that kind of money but since I got the car with it at 9k mile, I am pretty happy about it =p

OK i am an honest person,i think the Nav looks ok but ,the truth is when compared with these portable Garmins and Tom TOM etc its a piece of crapp. When compared with other car manufacurer Navs like the Chevy Nav,Cadillac,Mercedes,Honda its a piece of crapp. The only thing is,is that it makes the interior look nicer, easthetically i mean.Either than that, its not even user friendly.I thought the NAV unit was touch screen and had vehicle info display and command on it,thats why i got it,the dealership never had one with a NAV unit for me to see,but it does nothing but basic NAV ,also the guidance arrow and map is only shown in one direction,i mean how f....ing annoying dumb is that, how simple stupid can a 1750usd Nav get.If for instance you are going North the sea is on your right, when you are going south, the sea is on your right again but the arrow now heads down south.Uggh and you can`t possibly change it.Also No DVD when the Nav is infact connected to a DVD player but the maps are on the DVD,so for 1750 you get a piece of shitttt,no hdd,no flash drive on a huge NAV system. You can`t see your speed and no satellite info. All NAVs can technically verify speed etc since they are connected to a satellite.

The Nav unit needs a major firmware, software upgrade its a load of ripp off for 1800usd out the door.(rant)(pukey)(piss)(gun)(jerkit)

for real...the nav is just too much money for what you get, imo. there are some oem navs that i would mind paying for...the acura one comes to mind...but this one just makes me feel like i'm being ripped off when i can just go and buy a portable nav for a few hundred (which is what i did).

IPOD Integration

This might be in whole other thread but,
Is there any full on Ipod integration for the NAV? Like to display your album art and all that. I know that there are several aftermarket units that do this.

Well, you can change the map orientation to follow your direction. RTM. I know that doesn't satisfy you , but at least one of your complaints can be solved.

I definelty like our Acura Navi (we have an RDX too) better, but it was also a 2500 dollar option, the Mazda's is a 1700 dollar option. I got mine just for the basics, so I dont get lost :) Sure, its not as good as the Honda/Acura, but it tells me where to go and it will be great for the re-sale value. Did I mention it looks really cool too???

Secret screen???????????????????
-Press Menu -> Navigation Set Up -> Calibration -> Map Version
-Press the joystick up, up, down, down.
(yes)

I am not saying that our NAV couldn't be better. But it is a tool, and at least for me it gets me places I ask it to and with a bit of practice it's not hard to use. If I wanted a Lexus, with all the baggage that goes along with it (e.g. high price, sloppy handling, etc.) I would have gotten it, but NAV is only one small part of the total car.

Couldnt have said it better.

I have the nav, not worth $1700, but i didnt have any other ms3's to choose from, and it was the only thing i didnt want.

My car stickered for $26,400, and i got it for $24,751. plus tax tag and title brought me up to $26,051.

Are you for real? Sounds like back in the day video games. But really, are you serious?
