NSN Motorsports Auto Tranny Cooler

NSN Motorsports is trying to gauge interest for an automatic tranny cooler for the Mazda3.

The 3 already has a nice water-water cooling system, but if you plan on doing any racing or hard driving, all that heat build up in the ATX can really do a number on it. This would be a kit that would augment (not replace) the water-water kit with an addition of a water-air kit. A front mounted intercooler would be used for this, and would overall be a very good mod for those people with ATX trannies who want to extend the life of them. (This is a drivability/protection mod, not anything that would add HP or TQ)

We just need sufficient interest to get the ball rolling on this kit.

We're looking to get the kit for under $200 for sure, hopefully even under $150 but before we can do all that we need to gauge some interest in such a thing.

So I ask you ... who here is interested in an ATX cooler?

Steve is working on getting components for this now. If NSN is able to sell this thing for $50, then that's what they will do. But we can only go through with this if there is some interest generated.

So no one has any interest for an install kit specifically made for the 3?

Well, since it's been a while here's some update on what we got:

This will be a HIGH QUALITY KIT!

We're looking at a 6-pass intercooler, braided steel hoses, AN fittings (that's right, no hose clamps!), and custom-made brackets to fit everything on very nice and clean(no zip-ties!)

All materials will be included, instructions as well as tech support, and there will be a warranty included with the kit as well - you aren't just throwing your money away. :)

If you run your car hard, or do any kind of racing, or even just use it as a daily driver - your ATX can BENEFIT from a tranny cooler. You are looking to extend the life of your tranny, every 20 degrees cooler you can keep transmission fluid results theoretically in doubling fluid and transmission life. This is a huge deal!

Steve and I will do our best to answer your questions, it's great to see some interest in this product. We'll have a working setup after Easter when I get back from spring break. We're shooting for $75-85 if we can keep the cost of parts down (without sacrificing quality, of course!) But final parts costs will be updated in the future.

Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! I want one!

Oh, wait... I don't have an atx. Damn. ;)

Steve and I are going to be putting a test kit on my car after spring break (I get back on the 27th)

We'll have a full writeup, pictures and goodies to go along with it all, hopefully we can answer any questions you might have then as well. :)

There has been a lot of interest generated in this part on some other forums, so hopefully we can get a production kit working soon after spring break. :)

What would the difference be between a univerisal $60 one and this?

Just wondering.. i dont even own a 3..

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back into town last night. :)

The differences will be in the quality of the kit.

This is a HIGH quality 6-turn intercooler. (most universal ones will be 4 or less from what i've seen.) The kit will have specific install instructions, custom made mounting brackets, and no guesswork on how to do everything. The fittings will be better than a universal kit, and the overall quality for everything will far surpass what you can buy from the store.

Pictures of parts of the kit should be up soon as well, Steve and I should be working on this kit real soon now that spring break is over. :)

Damn.. too bad I couldnt get this for my p5..

Steve has been busy building up his motor as of late. Just want to update that I've seen the cooler and it is pretty damn cool. 6 turns, beautiful copper fittings all around, and the finnage is very fine and VERY high quality.

Pictures up as soon as we can get them!

I AM DEFINETLY DOWN FOR ONE!!! gonna be doin a turbo setup on my atx and thats just what i need. an $ yet??

Well I am back home now and the tranny cooler is in.

There will be two kits available.

The first one is your basic kit. It'll include the cooler, mounting brackets, hoses and fittings. This one should come in at $75 + shipping.

The second kit is the same as the above, but with stainless steel braided hoses and AN fittings. This is the one you see in the pictures. This one should be $107 + shipping because of the super-expensive stainless hose.

This is still the prototype kit. The REAL THING will look a lot nicer. The brackets will be laser cut, and the fittings will be exactly matched.

The install process was fairly simple. Remove hoses from the already-present water cooler, attach the hoses to the air cooler. Using self-tapping screws the cooler mounts directly to the underside of the bumper, and you should be able to place it directly center or off to the driver's side if you prefer. Hose length will be long enough to reach to the center.

I am sure Steve will chime in when he gets a chance to as well. Here are the pictures of the kit showing off the fantastic 6-turn cooler (look at those fins!) and how it mounts to the vehicle. As I said, these brackets were hand made and are not fully representative of the final product - just to make sure that everything connects and works well.

Details on the final product as well as ordering info should be following soon!

mobo: Fear not. If things go well enough a MTX cooler will be in the works for the future.

We did an ATX one first because that's all we have available right now for test vehicles.

Nutari: You would have to PM TurfBurn about this.

A one-off kit could be feasable I would think, but I'll leave that call officially to him. :)
