Ha! He couldn't stand the fact that I bought the MSP. We went and looked at the WRX last spring, and I drove it while he rode passenger. Nice car, for sure! All wheel drive, 227HP, and of course; $25,000. He went upside down with his trade, and he had to beg his wife, I think - but he got his way. Too funny!

I have no regrets, however. The MAZDASPEED rocks! Plus; it has a better sound system, and overall suspension. Do I think the WRX is better, even considering the higher price? No. Personally; I feel Mazda is better quality - but hey, most of the Japanese car makers deliver good product.

I think Sport Compact Car magazine puts the MSP on top of their list as of Oct. '02, de-throning the Type R Integra. I'm not sure if the WRX was tested by them previously, but I'm sure it was.

Cheers!

This is the exact same thing they said about the MP3, then they vote the Neon as the best of the year.
:wtf:

i think the SRT-4 as car of the year is horse s***.

how do they come out with a car of the year for 2003, in FEBRUARY of the year?? and without even having tested a PRODUCTION model? There didnt even EXIST a production model when they reviewed and tested it, only the prototype.....and what about the STI/EVO/RX-8 etc? It compromises any value I had previously put in their judgement when they throw a 'title' around like that.

i dont remember ever reading that the srt-4 knocked the MSP off the mountain though....:)

it beat the MSP in the 8 car shootout, but technically, the MSP is still on top of the mountain

wonder where this mountain is...

SCC seems to just suck up to the car of the hour. The MP3 was the greatest then the Spec-V was the greatest, Later the MSP and then the Neon. Yet during all this the integra Type-R is always the comparison car.

I found the mountain. Its called Honda Owners! who are the majority reader of that mag so to not have a Honda as top dog would be a sin at best.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!! Man! Do I ever I agree with you! No doubt. Oh well; to each his (or) her own.

I would like to read this 8 car shootout test, however. I didn't see that. The supplement from Sport Compact Car (Oct. '02) put the MAZDASPEED on the top, indeed!

I think the only reason the WRX-EVO were not in the test is because of their $25,000+ price tag. I think the comparison was for econoboxes between $18,000 and $21,000.

I think they gave the SRT-4 the title because of it's brute power. Hell you have to admit fellas that it does have everything one would be looking for when it comes to cheap power. Great handling, better seats :), awesome power, big front mount (great foundation for building power). No stupid stereo already installed for those who don't want one. I think that SRT-4 deserved the title, I mean they did drive all of the competitors and they must have really liked it. Hell, the even said the MSP had better handling, but the power difference was just to large to be over looked.

Awwwwww, I did not realize the WRX was not tested alongside. Obviously; I realize the 57hp difference between the MSP and the WRX, but I think the MSP has the better handling package; but I may be mistaken.

But in Sport Compact Car magazine, were they not including the WRX when they placed the MSP on Top? If the MSP displaced the Integra Type R as their 'new' benchmark, certainly the price of the Integra is close enough. I guess, SCR magazine tests all the 'compact' sedans which would indeed have to include the WRX.

your friend payed way too much .I can pick a brand new wrx for 22k .I still dont know wich one to buy MSP or wrx.

Just to clear up some confusion:

Yes, SCC voted the SRT-4 #1 in their 8-car sport compacts under $20K shootout.

Then, after that, in a completely separate feature, they gave it top honours as the best sport compact of 2003. THIS contest was not limited to the 8 cars from the previous shootout. There was no price cap in this contest, either.

The only prereq's for this contest were A, for the car to be for sale in the U.S. by March 1, and B, for the manufacturer to make a test model available to SCC before their deadline.

That means SCC chose the SRT-4 over cars like the 350Z, WRX, and G35 Coupe, along with the 8 cars from the previous shootout.

Interesting...

My buddy's new WRX is parked by my MAZDASPEED right below my office window. Were on the second floor. Funny thing; from the second floor window the, WRX strongly resembles an SRT-4 Neon. At ground level, I (personally) think the MSP is sharper overall than the WRX. Actually, one of the girls in our office made that comment to me, as well.

If I were going to spend $25,000, I'm sure the WRX would have been my choice, but I really do like the looks of the MSP better.

Buster: That's not me talking...we're cool right? I apologized for my over-zealousness. I think it's great that we all have that passion for these kinds of cars, no matter what brand we drive.

Cheers! :D

Agreed! No worries.:D

I should probably just mind my own business, but I get inspired when someone shoots off.:o

i dont know if im bitter......but so what if i am. beer is bitter, everyone likes beer. nothin wrong with bein bitter

but my point was not that the MSP should have won. just that the SRT-4 while a super duper car.....isnt the best in my opinon.

I think AGR#7 is right: the MSP does beat the WRX. I drove the WRX and it does have the power, and you get even more with aftermarket mods. But it is 3100 lbs, so it's just not going to handle like the MSP will. The 4 wheel drive is nice if you live in the snow belt and need it half the year. But that's what's adding all that weight.

And now with the SRT-4, the WRX is going to have to peddle hard to keep up in a straight line. If you take the dyno numbers from the SRT-4 and divide by 0.85 for driveline losses, the car comes in at 260 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque! Pretty good.

But I think the SRT-4 styling is lousy and it's made in Mexico. Wonder how long the warranty is good for???

For the love of ... couldn't he wait until the redesigned Impreza at least? The bug-eyed WRX is so oooogly.
