[Here's the monthly sales report I've been doing, it just adds the historical monthly sales from 2007 to 2009]

North America Mazda released their November 2009 US sales data.

In November 2009 1,095 Mazda5s were sold, down 27.0% from November 2008. The YTD sales were much lower than November of last year ( 16,866 vs. 19,137 )

For comparison 5,923 Mazda3s were sold in November. Mazda sales overall were up 6.9% over the previous November.

Here's the data I have gathered from 2007 to the present.

Wow, that is 3 pathetic months in a row for the Mazda5.

Does everyone think it still is an inventory problem or is something else up?

I seem to remember when the 5 was first introduced Mazda said they'd be happy with 15,000 per year. Looks like they're happy!

Especially since they don't advertise it at all. I hope we start hearing details about the 2011; a new family hauler is in my future and I'm looking for a reason to have a two Mazda garage.

Low gas prices make consumers have short memory, LOL. The dealer where I service my car has only 2 2010 in inventory now, all lonely in the back of the lot...

Anyway, they seem to be very conservative in their business cases, reminded me of this case for diesels, but if they are making money it should be OK for them I guess (dunno)

According to Seita Kanai, head of research and development at Mazda, the Japanese automaker would need to sell at least 10,000 diesel engines in the States to make a profitable business case. Not surprisingly, Mazda is studying Volkswagen's recent success in offering diesels here in America to see if there's any chance of moving the required units.

From a guy at the sales end I have had not fun for the last 4 months saying...augh we are sold out and we will not have the units until years end.

Well we are here and I can count 6 units on the ground..so production is behind...big time.

Besides the pickup truck sales which you've already mentioned, the number that pops out to me is the CX-7. I'm indifferent about the front end restyling but think the more sensible non-turbo 4 cyl is a good addition. The turbo only engine was the main reason my wife and I didn't want it 2 years ago while car shopping. Can't help but think the 4 cyl CX-7 will steal some sales from the Mazda5.

Good catch, I just read this:

NEW YORK Mazda North American Operations said Tuesday that vehicle sales increased by less than 1 percent in November on stronger sales of the CX-7 crossover SUV.

BY THE NUMBERS: The automaker said it sold 14,255 vehicles in November compared with 14,134 in the same month last year. However, overall sales have declined so far this year with 189,512 sold in the first 11 months compared with 245,984 in the same part of 2008.

HOT MODELS: Mazda sold more than twice the number of its popular CX-7 model in November, making up for lackluster sales of the Mazda5 and Mazda6 models.

about 2 yrs ago we were looking at a CX-7; the test drive didn't impress me (I guess I was expecting more zoom-zoom from the turbo. that, along w/ req prem fuel and bad mpg turned us off). but I remember we walked past a Mazda5, the 1st I'd seen one. I said "hey, what's that?" the salesman goes "oh, you don't want that".
well, turns out I DID, but I didn't get it from him.
I think Mazda does pretty well in a very difficult, crowded marketplace. I've always driven cars that were not 'popular' (I've never owned a toyota or a honda) and I'm happy w/ the 5 being out of the ordinary.
