North America CX5 Owners: Would you trade-in your current gas SUV for a diesel one?

I was reviewing a number of CX5 diesel -drive tests. It seems, the diesel engine is a different world (headbang). If this engine comes in north america at the end of this year, are you willing to trade-in your current gas engine?

My option: I will trade-in my current gas engine maybe at the end of the 2013. Also, I will expect a maximum hit of 5k within a year for the trade-in. If this will work at that time, then I am = all in :).

Given that diesel is more expensive in US, getting 39-40MPG right now, highly unlikely they will offer diesel under 28K nor in SPORT trim with 6MT, etc

I can't see myself justifying the need to make the change. I only paid $20K for mine and has all the features I wanted. I am good for next 4-5years at least.

It would be financially irresponsible of me to even entertain this idea.
Besides, I agree with hollis, it probably wont come with manual (dealbreaker for me) and it will probably be pitched as a luxury trim.

If it had been available in diesel with a manual transmission when I was ready to buy 2 months ago, it would have been a done deal.

No I would not. Not a good use of money (trading newish vehicle)..

If I had my silver 6MT Sport yet, this is exactly what I would reply!

This is exactly why I'm waiting to pull the trigger on a CX-5. I'm waiting for the diesel.

I am also waiting on the skyactiv-D, but like the others above I doubt it will be sold with the 6-speed manual in the states. Still, if the performance and mileage is good enough and I don't hear of any serious issues with the automatic, I might just go for the diesel with the auto.

The manual would be my first choice, though, and if the price premium is too much I will just get a base model with no options.

My perfect config would be:
Light blue color
17" wheels
manual
diesel
touch screen with gps option and back-up camera
nothing else

Every car bought new loses money. The longer you keep it, the more you lose. The best way to buy a car is to get an old car, and drive it for a few years, then sell it for what you bought it for. But thats not always the most fun thing to do.

Depending on what the diesel costs, how much better it actually is, and what the trade in would be, It may be worth spending the money to get the diesel and just enjoy driving it for 10 years instead of driving the gas engine and wishing you had a diesel.

On the other hand, it's my wires car, I don't really drive it that often, and her commute to work is less than a mile. So I'll probably just let her live with the gas engine. I mean its not THAT bad. LOL

Europe seems to be the place for diesel. Go to France or Germany, Diesel is the first choice, and we in the UK are not far behind. More miles per gallon, reliability and being able to get hundreds of thousands of miles on an engine helps. They don't like the cold in the Alps though. One of my Daughters used to live in upper Austria, and her petrol Volkswagen started first time even after being buried in ice for 3 weeks.

I have a fleet of 8 small vans all of which are diesel. My cars for the last 15 years have been diesel. The only exception is the Wife's Mazda 2 which is petrol. I went to Vancouver island 2 years ago, and the rattle of Diesel only came from the buses. Taxi's were Toyota Prius in the main, whereas in Europe all taxi's are oil burners.

Not a current owner, waiting impatiently for the SkyActive-D.
Based on Australian figures, it seems the MPG would be ~15% better than the current gas model (corrections welcome!).
Around here Diesel costs ~7% more than regular, so overall it still cheaper per mile.

The big question is what would the price premium be. Even with all this awesome torque, there is a limit to what I am willing to spend for something I don't really need.
Hoping for a modest premium. If too expensive, I'll have to reconsider, that's where a 2.5L SkyActive can come in.

I don't think I would be trading it for a diesel version but I would probably in another 4 years add another car to my stable. Probably a speed 3 (next gen) or a second hand BMW 328i.

As far as economy is concerned, I am already paying less at the pumps in comparison to my Mazda 3.

So I am happy.

I drove diesel cars back in Europe. I am driving gas cars here in Canada. I must say that I am more comfortable with a diesel driving experience (my choice). I really have a problem with VW prices/maintenance cost/repair cost; otherwise, I will be sold for a diesel car purchased from them.

Some people prefer to lease their cars for a number of reasons. Nothing wrong with it.
Some people prefer to eat at restaurant instead of doing home (cheaper). Nothing wrong with it.

If I will be alive for the next 40 years, then I will be lucky. If tomorrow, I will die (which are good chances; you never know) who cares that I saved 1k-500k cash in my account. I am dead!

Live today, as tomorrow never comes. If tomorrow comes, do not worry, it is still today. Thus, tomorrow, never comes!

I want to pass away with no money in my pocket and in my last day of my life to have enough money to do whatever I want to do.

Some says it is the perfect dream of a business man to have me as a consumer. Some says I am a dreamer. I say, I am trying to have my perfect dream of a man doing the perfect business with his life. Hope, I will succeed.

If not .... 40 years from now, I will be driving around this country in an old 2013 Mazda CX5 - gas engine. :)

Would I trade for a diesel in a year ?.... Hard to say, today.... . I do see the advantages of the diesel, and I have an old 1984 VW Rabbit Diesel, w/ 215,000 miles on it..... the motor is as strong as it ever was......

My plan is to see how the CX-5 does, over the 3 year warranty period, and THEN decide if I will keep it, or trade it...... (it is paid for ) If they put a diesel, in a 6 speed manual, and the vehicle holds up well in the first years.... I would be very tempted to trade for a diesel CX-5.

Changed my mind about the diesel, at least until Mazda addresses the rising oil issue Australians are experiencing, but maybe even if it's fixed, since it seems the diesel is not ideal for predominantly short trips.
