Nology PDA Dyno, here I come!

Do you know where the connector is in our car? That sounds like a nice tool to have. (Just have to wait until they have software for the Clie T665)
Let us know how it performs!

The OBDII connector is located on the underside of the dash. It is molded into the bottom of the panel directly below the steering column and resembles a game controller connector.

How does it actually work? What does the OBDII sensor actually sense? How accurate is this?

OBDII is a standardized on board diagnostic found in all new cars. You can get all sorts of readings from the OBDII connection. (A/F, Idle, O2 Sensor, Engine Light Codes, Etc.) There is some info at http://www.obdii.com/

I was looking at a similar product earlier today that logs stuff. Thought it might be a good idea if you have kids and want to know how they are driving. Don't even have to tell them about it. This could be a young drivers worst nightmare, but a parents best friend.

There's also one under the hood.

SWEET, Linux, we want pics and dyno graphs TOMORROW! I'm excited about this...I may order one myself.

the ability to clear check engine light and read engine error codes alone make this a worthwhile purchase, measuring performance output is just icing on the cake :)

Well Linux....I look forward to reading your results!!

I wonder if Nology is going to produce a PDA dyno kit for all of us that own Pocket PC's...it sux being left out (doh)

Isn't Sony CLIE a PocketPC-based PDA? They have a version for that...

No, Sony CLIE is Palm based. I have an Audiovox Maestro (kick ass cheap Pocket PC with CompactFlash AND Secure Digital slots). I also have a 3200mAh battery pack for it (size of a pager) and a 320MB compact flash card. You should've seen the looks I got from people on the airplane last week while on vacation as I watched a couple of Simpsons Episodes and the full length Ronin in Divx!

And while I'm being off topic, I am working on a 3d-engine and game for PocketPCs as a hobby to try and make some money. Need to get back on that before it gets nice outside.

Cool Linux, do you think we can change them from car to car, for comparison?

Yes to both replies above. I only had time to load the software, go to sleep, and on the way to work display meter data. This s*** is on pimp status!! (thumb) I have yet to run the dyno program, but I am reading up on it while watching the Bourne Identity at work. By the way, at highway speeds at 40 Degrees F (4 C), the Coolant temp stays above 180 F (82 C). After running and gunning in a short boosted burst, it goes up to about 185 F. When I park it and let it idle, the temp is around 196 F (91 C). When I turn the engine off, and let it sit for a second, the temp goes to 212 F which is 100 C (or boiling)! I will have more data when I change out the stock thermostat for the Mazdaspeed thermostat.:D

Oh, and I cleared that pesky Check Engine light. I checked it again when I got to work, and the same code was pending to make a return (code= P0421- Warm up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)). This code could be a number of things:

  • Bad 02 sensor
  • Bad Catalytic Converter
  • Exhaust Leak
