2003 black mica #1124
well my wife has been driving my car for a week and she tells me that it sounds funny... no explanation. just sounds funny. so i go to start it up yesterday and holy crap does it idle rough... almost feels like it is running on 3 cylenders. it runs for a while then smooths out and tosses me a check engine light. so I go to start it today and no start.. kinda sucks. any ideas?

The only mods i have are colder plugs. (installed 1 year ago) and a set of kart boy shifter bushings.. i am going to call my dealership tomorrow.. I made sure the battery wasn't dead. my charger said it was fully charged.

No crank no start? Or did it crank and not start?

Why do you have colder plugs if everything else is stock?

Yeah, I don't think the colder plugs are doing you any good on a stock motor. Now, extended reach, however...

Anyway, the plugs *may* be the problem, what with the colder temps outside.

mine did the same thing, on the way home from the track about 80 miles away, i shifted and instead of the RPM's dropping to ~750, they just kept going and the car shut off... IN MID DRIVE. it kept happening all the way home, next morning i went out to check it out and drove it around... nothing. if it's a porblem maybe i have it too and it just fixed itself.

#1 Don't let your wife drive a turbo car unless you tell her how.

#2 If you are all stock take it to the dealer.

#3 If you installed your new plugs did you gap them correctly? I know the ZFR7F plugs come gapped to .044", so make sure they are gapped to somewhere around .032" before you take it to the dealer.

it cranks and dosen't start. and as for the plugs I gapped them to .032 . they were a christmas gift last year. I was hoping to get a dp and cai. then turn up the boost. but my other car got totalled and had to purchase a new one. I'm calling mazda in the morning. i hope i dont have to pay for a tow all the way there...

very rough idle. yes the car was shaking my shifter looked like it was doing a strip tease. I haven't looked at the plugs yet. i was planning on doing that in the morning

The factories are extended reach...
Are you sure? I could swear I saw a thread here that showed pictures of the stock and extended reach, and they weren't the same.

Nope, I looked again...the poster said he got one step colder AND extended reach, so I assumed the stockers weren't. On a side note, I have a set of BKR7E's sitting around. Inever put them in because I heard negative things about them on stock applications. Anything new on this? Sorry for the threadjack.

sounds like the car is misfiring... but if you didnt get a flashing cel then im not really sure whats up. When going colder on stock in certain conditions and what not you could get pre-det which constantly could cause damage.

could also be a bad coil not allowiing one or two of the cylinders to fire. Id check the connectors, coils and plugs...

just checked the plugs. they are pretty black... mazda roadside assistance is on the way to my house in the next 60 min.

stock - ZFR6F - extended reach
a lot of people use - BKR7E - one step colder, not extended reach
they should be using ZFR7F - one step colder, extended reach

The ZFR7F's better for stock applications, in other words?

no I didn't see any bubbles. but there was a lot of black crud on the electrode. i cleaned them off some and stuck them back in and still didn't start...
