A friend of mine has an 01 mp3 with a new(used) engine that was just installed by mazda(old one ate a rod bearing). Well after he got it back, whenever he accelerates, it has no power at all at any throttle possition until it hits 5k then it is normal, and by no power i mean imagine its in 5th gear at 30 punched... thats what it is like in every gear before 5000rpms regardless of the throttle! now the dealer said the engine was out of a protege 5 and said it could be the timing belt is off a tooth.... what do you guys think?

Did they install a new timing belt on the used engine? It's possible that the cams weren't properly aligned with the crank.

If the timing belt was off a tooth or two then from past experience with my old Talon it would idle rough, as if it had cams. But its still a possibility.

I think that since you had this engine installed by Mazda that the dealer should be the one fixing this. There has to be some sort of guarantee from them that the engine should work fine. I'm sure they can plug in the car to one of their many scanners to see whats happening to it.

I think the car needs to go back to whoever did the work. Period.

yea a dealer installed it, but i am not sure if they replaced the timing belt, he has taken it back there and had them run the codes and nothing poped up on that end of the problem(its not under warrenty any more and they said its not there problem to fix it with out charge thats why its not there right now), i am pretty sure the check engine light is on because of only one O2 sensor reading correct(header with not precat)but thanks for all the help. Today we will look at the belt and if it is on the correct marks and whatnot, ill tell him to check his maf also
thanks again

And just for grins, run a compression check on the car. If you have the proper tools, it only takes a few minutes.

VICS malfunction

i think if that happens, then it would throw a cel. and no mazda should fix this problem cuz their dumpasses ****** up on something. u bought the engine from them, u paid them to install it CORRECTLY and if they dont, then they should fix it for FREE. mazda dealers really ****** piss me off.... saying that its not their problems, mazdas have nothing but problems, and this will probaly be my last mazda.

its an engine out of a p5 into an mp3. maybe they used the IM from the p5 would the mp3 ecu have problems with that

bad news to that guy that drives the mp3 if the dipshit swapped the whole engine with the P5 intake manifold

there goes the 10hp up on the mp3!

if so then the vtcs would be the problem. bad vtcs bad. the dealer is responsible for fixing it, if they wont tell them ur gonna get a lawyer that usually works in my experiences dealing with them

if the intake manifold has VTCS (which the MP3 one shouldn't), then the solenoids can be inadvertently hooked up backwards and it'll cause this problem too
