NJ Emissions

Alright, I'm thoroughly confused on NJ's emissions laws & testing.

I want to replace my exhaust (specifically, just the downpipe for now). The stock downpipe has two cats, with an O2 sensor between them.

APEX sells a 2.5" downpipe with a single high-flow cat. So, the O2 sensor would plug into the same place (after one cat), so it shouldn't throw a CEL.

Is this legal in NJ? If it can pass the tailpipe emissions test, does it even matter that I replaced the cats?

What would happen if I got pulled over and a cop checked under my car? I don't think I would have a problem because I wouldn't be catless, but I can't get a clear answer from reading the laws.

Thank you for posting my exact question. I am definitely confused as far as my legal options for exhausts on my MSP in NJ.

i believe it illegal to remove a good cat withen the first 5 years. you can allways bs and say it broke or something. also for inspection you do not have tailpipe emissions for your car. they plug into the obd2 port and check the moniters. they will fail you if there is no cats.

damn.. we got emmisions/ inspection every year over the river here... i hope i pass... ***crosses fingers*** im due in september.

Don't know if it matters or not but, I passed NJ emissions with the reader in the muffler in my '94 Honda Prelude Si last year that had an Apex'i N1 catback exhaust, Neuspeed ignition wires & AEM CAI..........

i used to inspect car at kilmer station untill i got indicted on bribery and misconduct.....was makin like 300 a day sellin stickers untill covert caught on......im now serving my 2 year probation sentence:)

As far as replacing your functioning cat ... yes its illegal unless damanged -- but didnt you run over a shovel on the parkway?

From our personal experience with my bf's 99 cougar running factory cat and custom exhaust .... this is what we have learned.

1. Never go to a state facility -- just pay the $50 and go to an STS or something like that. The STS on Rt 1 in Monmouth Junction is great.

2. When we took the car they asked if the cat was still there -- we said yes ... he never checked tho. As long as the main cat under the car is there, your golden. Dont worry about any of the others.

3. There is no tailpipe emissions done anymore. They plug in under the dash into the OBD port. So basically, if there isnt a CEL on, you will pass.

4. By going to a private shop, they will overlook alot of other things -- tinted windows, light covers, etc.

Thanks for the hints :)

BTW I have all of the pictures from the meet sitting on my computer. They are all huge files (3072x2048, about 3 MB's each)...let me know if you want me to email them to you full size or if you want me to resize them.

lol nice man

I read in the Trentonian today that they just recently made emissions harder in NJ.. failing twice as many cars as before.. ( i think up to 8%) It mentioned if you have a CEL you fail regardless.

Ah the good old Trentonian...do you remember the one headline about a year or two ago when Trenton Pyschiatric Hospital had a fire?

ROASTED NUTS?

lol...yeah, the test is now a OBDII test not a tailpipe sniff test.

didnt catch that one, sound funny.lol.. It is a good paper though it covers my local area sports real well, has some fun triva ??'s everyday and the page 6 girl

oh yea, only $.35
