Nissan Skyline GT-Rs seized in California over possible illegal importation

The importation of the Nissan Skyline GT-R to the United States has been a Hollywood-sized epic spanning ten years. For a while, the only game in town was to go through Motorex for a crash-tested, USDOT and EPA-approved Godzilla. Unfortunately, the company owner let his fondness of Japanese hostess clubs take precedence over delivering cars. Since Motorex shut its doors in 2005, enthusiasts have been scouring each and every loophole in US Customs laws to keep the supplies flowing. In 2006 ,a company called Kaizo began taking orders. Their model, vastly different from Motorex's expensive methods, involved the importation of specialty-constructed Nissan Skyline GT-R bodies from Japan to be mated with customer-supplied powertrains upon delivery to the United States, thus creating a kit car (to put it simply).

Following the tradition that is the GT-R saga, Kaizo's actions have recently been called into question by pretty much every acronymed authority -- DOT, EPA, ICE, CARB, DOJ and FBI. Charges against Kaizo have yet to be filed, but along with a raid on company headquarters, various customers have been delivered letters suggesting exportation and some have even lost their rides. To date, five R34s and one R32 GT-R have been seized by kevlar-clad armed officers. Exasperated customers have banded together in an attempt to find some salvation in this mess, and it isn't only hardcore enthusiasts left out in the cold by the scandal either. Recently, rather high-profile operation utilized Kaizo resources to create a valuable franchise, and if the drama keeps up at this rate, perhaps the Nissan Skyline GT-R story could be their next project.

We can't find Osama bin Laden, but we can find some car lovers in CA who paid good money for a excellent mode of transportation?(boom07)

Next step, get Osama a GT-R and wait for carnage.(five-0)

a great use of government resources there...what a ******* joke...i hate our government :/

Its like if a cop pulls you over. "why didnt you get the guy who was going faster than me?". response, "you were easier to catch".

I wouldn't rag on the government for this. I mean the guys going after these cars are doing their jobs. The people that you should be bitching at is the company that illegally brought them over and the idiots that paid for them!
I mean come on, if you want that car you have to know the standards that they have to meet. And to pay that much for a car that you know is being brought over by way of a POSSIBLE loop hole is just idiotic.

Now the Osama joke was funny.

I wish the skylines were easier to get over here, then they might be affordable to people that can't drop 100k on a car.

its our bad ass government that set the rules that made them illegal to have...so still...**** the government

thats pretty ****** up, people spent good money on those cars and most of them were probably modded so what do they do now after they spent thousands on there cars?

that was a dumbass move for the government, what exactly are they going to gain by taking these cars off the road?

The cars are not DOT legal. Plain and simple. They probably dont meet the US standards of safety that is necessary to be driven on the roads. Sure the cars can be imported for track use/showcar/kit car, but Kaizo imported them through loopholes, and got caught. tough s***.

big deal...i don't get the whole crash safety thing...if i wanna drive a car that could kill me if i get in a wreck, so be it, how does that affect others? As for the emissions and such...**** the environment :P

Our bad government! Please, there are standards here. If you don't like it move. I hear you can get great deals on plane tickets right now. The law is the law, and if you want to try and get around it go ahead. But it'll cost you. And like these guys it will be big. And by the way, while our government has it flaws it's still the best in the world. When was the last time we were attacked? And while the US dollar took a hit, all the other countries are spending money here. bad, no. Going in the wrong direction, yes. But because our government is so great we get a chance to fix that real soon.

i dont understand the whole DOT s***, there are plenty of cars over in europe that would not pass over here but that doesnt mean they arent safe
i think its dumb how the US always have to have the highest standards but yet we have the shittiest cars cuz everyone focuses on what happens when u get in an accident instead of what the car does when ur actually driving it

oh well, i still think its retarded that the repoed there cars

Frivolous law suits! Thats your answer. You buy a car that isnt up to par and get hurt in a wreck. Even though its your fault your parents sew the carmaker. Or you dont have insurance and the taxpayers have to foot the bill. There are countless reasons for these rules.

OK, can somebody please take this soap box form me?
:D

such a shame to see a nice car sit in a lot with some POS honda that the goverment seized too.. terrible.. what would fare better in a crash test.. a geo metro or skyline.. i mean common.. that cars safer then most small cars made in the US pre 2000..

too add to this. i know serveral DSM'ers that are driving around with no EVAP system which is illegal in the US because they got their 4G63's (motor) from japan..
