NGK Extended Reach Spark Plugs

I'm running 11.9. Had the shop hook up a wideband and everything looks fine a couple of weeks ago. Actually the BKR6E-11 were gapped at .030 as well, I decide to go colder cause I just though it may be safer. The shop didn't have BKR7E-11's so I went with the BKR7E instead.

I just changed them yesterday and decided to take a look today.

The one's I took out (BKR6E-11's) look exactly like the top picture on the very top. Was just stumped why these new one's are white tiped instead?
I just bought these as well. I will try them out soon!

after reading this entire thread at 2 this morning i am still at a loss as to if i should change my plugs out for new ones. i have 45k on the odo and i do run n2o from time to time but only have gone through 3 bottles in a year and half so its not like im on it that often, plus its only a 35 shot.
can someone suggest my best course? i currently have a header, aem, axel back, sparkco wires, and planning to do cams in the near future. you guys seem to all know what your talking about but it seems that your all running FI and im NA. will i see any gains or would it just be better to change them even w/o seeing gains on the dyno. im intreasted in just keeping my engine running at peak performance.

If I'm reading this correctly, you have 45k miles on the stock plugs (wow)

If so, my answer is 'YES' you need to get new plugs, even if they are platinums. As to which ones, any of the plugs mentioned in this thread should be better than plugs with 45k miles on them :D

Seriously, I use BKR7E gapped to 0.030" at 8psi checked frequently with no issues. I may switch to the ZFR7F-11 in the interest of science :D

The reason the FI crowd changes plugs in not necessarily for gains, but more to avoid problems at higher boost levels. For you, I would recommend replacing your plugs with the OE replacement plugs and gap to the lower end of the spec.

Peace...(hippy)

I don't know about N/A applications, but I just put the ZFR7F-11's in my car and it seemed to help it pull smoother up top. The idle is also a bit better now; less vibration in the shifter.

It depends on what your running for plugs now... Yes you want a colder plug when using n20, but not necessarily colder then what you have in there now... the only way you can tell what plug to use is to talk to people running n2o and see what temp they are at. I would use that rating... then test hotter from there(because your na), but make sure that your not getting too hot.... AND DONT FORGET in order to test, you will have to use your n2o.. cause regular driving is different then driving with n2o.

In any case... good luck.

P.S. with whatever you get... if your running a 6 for a plug and decide to go extended, you will run hotter with the extended then a regular.-----extended= hotter when comparing two plugs of the same rating.

Hmmm, I never knew that. Even though I just posted a while ago that the extended reach feel better, I am having second thoughts now. It seems to stumble at idle a little more than it used to with my BKR7E's...I might switch back since you said it's hotter with the extended than with the normal.

or you can use a colder range extended... I think he is saying that a 6 of a normal reach is similar to a 7 of an extended... it's not goign to change the actual burn temp in the engine... just the temp of the tip of the plug... so modifying the heat range and you'll be set..

You shouldn't get stumble... my extendeds solved my stumbling issues... make sure you are gapped properly... I'm boosted so I run a gap of 28-32 thousandths.

Actually, having extended plugs will run colder, the exposed gap will cool down with air/fuel mixture coming from the intake valves.

Does anybody have actual pics of the NGK Extended Reach plugs, b/c i had ordered some from Flyin' Miata and i think they sent me the wrong ones

I could take pictures if you need me to... just pull out one of your stock plugs though... the threads should match pretty much but you'll notice the insulator and the metal arc are a little longer.. probably less than an 1/8" that's it...

they also will say right on the plug the numbers.

just read the model # on the plug. or do what turf said and compare them to others. THe extened reach seem to stick down about 1/8" further then normal.

Im not a plug mechanic... but I'd be careful with extended plugs thinking they are colder.... IMO the person who explained it to me knows the most about cars that I would trust, and he said (if i remember correctly) that extended would be more in the burn, and "have more plug in the chamber, resulting in hotter temps" but... hey whatever works.

Check your plugs, if they look good they look good.. if not change them... some ppl use NGK some use autolite.. different cars different reaction.
peace.

cause when i look at the plugs that Flyin' Miata sent me, they look like regular plugs. Any pics will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I took pics but now I can't read the memory card. (pissed)

Anyway, here's the quick check. Pull one of your "normal" spark plugs out. Put the two tips together and if you have the extended reach, you will see it is longer.

I made a quick drawing. . .this is what I mean. If you can put the two plugs together, you've got the wrong ones. (See how the blue touches the red, but the red doesn't touch the blue.) The Red is stock, the Blue is the extended reach. . .this also assumes they are gapped the same, but you can definitely see a difference in the picture and with the plugs.

hey guys i have read all through all 14 pages but never really saw a clear cut answer as to what the best spark plug would be for a n/a p5. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?? thanks

Stock Hot plugs. If you have 6 range, you could pull a bit more power with 5's.

If you could find extended reach in the 5-6 range, it would be great!

thanks igdrasil i'll have to check what plugs came with it stock and what would represent a longer reach (i.e..what should the numbers look like??
