Next Generation Speed6 is in Doubt!

Despite our hopes and dreams of an AWD 3.7 twin turbo MazdaSpeed6 around 2010 or so, it may not be in the works. There may be no replacement at all for the Speed6. Sort of understandable from a business point of view, they had to deeply discount the Speed6's in the US, although they threw the claimed 5000 per year allotment out the window which didnt help.

IMHO It's too soon to tell. Mazdaspeed models typically come out late in the life cycle of any particular model as a last hurrah for that generation. With that in mind, a 2010 Speed6 is much too soon for a car that's essentially launching '08-'09.

This is sad, but what I really hope they DON'T do is what Nissan did with the Altima SE-R. It was no faster than a 3.5 SE, it just had some unique body pieces, different wheels and slightly stiffer suspension and and extra cog in the transmission. The current MS6 is a wholly different driving experience than any other 6, and if they can't deliver that again, they shouldn't bother.

I suspected a TT V6 w/AWD would be too expensive to put in a car that they'd end up selling at fire-sale prices due to lack of interest. As much as I love my car, the MS6 didn't have a wide audience and it may never. The price they'd have to charge for a TT V6 AWD monster sedan would push buyers into BMW territory and that's probably exactly where they'd go to avoid paying that kind of money for any Mazda. It's sad to me that the MS6 was such a sales disappointment. For whatever reason, AWD doesn't have a big following and turbos don't appeal to a huge number of mid-size 4-door buyers. The car just wasn't right for enough people.

Fortunately, Mazda can fall back on the huge success of the MS3. Their marketing folks must know what they're doing, because if it had been my choice to make, the MS3 would have been a sedan with an AWD option.

They do know what they're doing as far as the MS3 in a hatch version. The global demand for hot hatches far outweighs US preferences for a small turbocharged sedan.

On a related note, I have not heard a final word on whether we are getting a Mazda6 on a modified Mondeo platform or a refreshed (recycled) version of the current platform. Has anyone else.

I am beginning to think we are not getting the Mondeo platform at all. That is why the next gen Mazdaspeed6 doesnt make sense for the US. Since the US version would likely be sold only in North America the development cost to make 2 Mazdaspeed versions (one for North America and one for the rest of the world) wouldnt make sense. Very disappointing. It will be a while before I am ready to buy a new car, but I can say for certain that I will not buy a recycled version of the Current 6 when I know what the rest of the world is getting.

I've been following all the blogs, Mazda releases, and reviews and it is all contradictory. Some say it will have EUCD underpinnings. Others say a modified version of the current one, CD3-2. Mazda says it's all Mazda developed from the ground up which hints CD3-2. Heck, there are even rumors saying that N. America will get the CD3-2 and ROW will get EUCD which as you pointed out will not achieve economies of scale - something which Mullally is desperately trying to accomplish with Ford and its interests.

As great as the EUCD chassis is, I'm not ready to discount the CD3 in terms of performance yet based on how I've seen it perform. Let's just say I wouldn't be disappointed if the next generation has CD3-2 underpinnings.

I read a review of the Euro 2.0L 6 and it said that it beats it Mondeo equivalent in terms of suspension performance. But then again, we go back to the same question - what underpinning does it have?

i'm glad the speed6 dident have a large fan fallowing, i got an awesome deal on an awesome car, and i love, if they make it again, i'l buy it again.

I don't think they'll make another MS6. Not at least till the model's on it's way out. I got one, so I'd really be delighted if they didn't make another.

As far as the new model goes, don't count out out anything just yet, not due to price consideration, at least. Mazdaspeed pulled a rabbit out of their hat offering everything in the MS6 as it is for the price, IMO. Talk about bang for the buck! I'm not worried about resale value, even despite the deep discounts.

...although they threw the claimed 5000 per year allotment out the window which didnt help.

Don't be disappointed... by my assumptive figuring, purely based on the latest recall vin count there were only about 10,000 of them built for the two years combined in N. America (6k-2006, 4k-2007), so there's your 5000 per year.

The way modders are blowing them up (not that there's anything wrong with that), unmolested survivors are only gonna be worth more. I also think the
survivors will appeal to slightly older buyers when resold, due to the relative modding difficulty being experienced now (as opposed to say, an STI or EVO). So a little patience and hanging on to your car for a while should pay off, especially if you can resist the urge to destructively mod (avoid the irreversible and keep stock parts). The MS3 will probably be more valuable over time than the MS6, just cause it's a badass little hot hatch. Trying to find an original example of an MS3, THAT will be rare.

I also read this the other day and i hope that they make a mazdaspeed version...from all the hype that this car is already getting before it is even released i would imagine that they would create a mazdaspeed line. I am pretty sure that my next car will be a new 6 and i would really be interested in a mazdaspeed version. Also any word on release date of the new 6? about how long after the release date do you usually see a mazdaspeed version released? a year or two?

This should answer your question even though you have to intrepret the answer by looking at the graphs and diagrams as it is in Russian. The new 6 is indeed an updated CD3. The diagrams shows the improvement made from the old CD3.

Holy crap! Nice find! (yippy)

I'm still poring over that site. I believe there's a graph showing the power increase of the 2.5 MZR from the 2.3.

Why can't US auto articles be like this?
