newbie question

Hello folks,

My new 3 is less than a week old and for the past few days it has been taking longer and longer to crank over from a cold start. Today it took at least 4 or 5 seconds before it actually started. The strange thing is that if I turn it off and try again right away it starts up immediately. Has anyone else experienced this....WTF could it be... please help!

PS As this is a long weekend here in Canada I can not get it to the dealer until Tuesday morning and I am concerned I might be stranded somewhere this weekend if it decides not to start at all.

Sounds to me like the fuel system isn't holding pressure. Could be a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a leaking injector.

Try this:

On your next cold start, turn the key ON but don't start the engine. You should hear the fuel pump whir for a couple seconds (turn down the damn radio! :p ). Do this three or four times to build up pressure and THEN start the engine. If it starts right up, then you'll know that the system isn't holding pressure and you'll be able to give the dealer a heads-up when you take it in for warranty service.

When I first got my Mazda3, I noticed this too. Someone suggested this and I do it all the time now (its similar to goldwing's suggestion). Turn ignition to ON position and leave it there. Leave it there for either 3 seconds (or when you see the fuel gauge move up to the proper position), then start it up. With this method, no more waiting a few seconds before it cranks.

Exactly!

You da man/woman!!! Tried it today a number of times and it worked like a charm every time with your technique.

Thanks very much for the info. I really appreciate it.

then you should get it checked out. a new car shouldnt do that and it may get worse later on...

Oh yes, definitely. Its going in on Tuesday morning. Hopefully it wont be a lengthy fix though - I will miss every minute without my car.

sometimes mine has the same problem when starting. kinda weird but i think mine is a grounding issue and a groundwire kit upgrade might solve that. other than the slow starting ive never had any other problems at all with mine. good luck with yours man.
