new wheel bearing noise?

i just had a shop do my passenger front wheel bearing as it was making noise and i had no time to do it myself. a few days have gone by no issue now only on take offs (turned or not does not make a difference, so not cv axle) and only for a quick few seconds i get a reeeek noise from the wheel the bearing was replaced on. (sounds like something winding up) and the noise stops instantly when i touch the brakes but does it again when i let it roll. took it back by the shop that did the work and he said some new ones do that until they "break in" does this sound normal? i know it seems odd to me, i have a decent mechanical backround with tinkering with my family's cars and working at autozone but never heard of this

I have never heard of 'breaking in' bearings... Or them making a sound for that matter.

Anyone else?

Have them check the torques and the install.

Wheel bearings shouldn't make any noise. Does it sound anything like brakes squealing? It could be your brake pads, if the shop didn't put anti-squeal on the backs of them when they reassembled. If it was the wheel bearing making noise, applying the brakes should have no effect on the sound.

my thoughts as well, the sound is a very high pitched whining or wind up like noise like vreeem! like something maybe sticking i am leaning towards brakes but when i jacked that wheel off the ground it spins just as it feels like it should doesnt seem like the brakes are holding it up

UPDATE: i took it by a 2nd shop and the tech showed me what he believes is the noise maker, he showed me how the oem wheel seal sits in just a little further than the timken branded one i had put in, he said this could cause a rub and therefore a noise until the extra thickness in the new seal is worn out.

he told me to wait a week and if it was still noisy then take it apart to further investigate. i am leaning toward that conclusion at the moment because the tech also looked at my rotors pads ect on that side and saw no issue the rotors were not messed up and the pads were not rubbing and were worn at an even amount to the other side.

i watched him do all of this as i do most of my own work but had to take the bearing to a shop to be pressed as i do not have tools for that. so i trust his opinion as he seemed to do a very through check and even ahd a few other techs listen and they all came to that same consensus.

so would a wheel seal cause this?

It's plausible, but I still can't see how applying the brakes would make the sound go away. I replaced my front left wheel bearing a couple years ago and installed a Timken wheel seal, and had no rubbing issues. The wheel seal is easy to replace, no special tools required. it only requires taking the hub loose from the axle shaft. I would try replacing it, and see if that cures it.

The only kind of bearing break-in I ever heard of was just to let the grease/lubricant settle in, which only means it won't spin as easily until that grease/lube settles.

Do you think they may have over-torqued something while putting it back together?

I don't know what the noise is, but "breaking in" a bearing is an absolute crock of s***.

Perhaps the seal is making the noise, but I wouldn't expect it to go away with braking.

well its going away slowly as its now not doing it all the time i could hear it before and i had another shop look at it and he showed me how the timken wheel seal is slightly thicker than oem one and it may have been rubbing. he said the noise will go away when it wears the thicker portion off. and i think this is what is happening as the noise has gotten quiter when its making noise and its now also not making noise all the time
