I am also new. I own a 2004 Subaru Forester which is just about on its last legs. I have never owned or considered a Mazda, but the (prospective) 2014 Cx-5 diesel sounds like it could be for me. I have had diesels before and I want the fuel economy, even at higher diesel prices.

Welcome! Basic or not, the 3 is a great car. Out of the Skyactiv 3 hatches, I ended up with the base trim for 2012 and it was definitely hard not to get disappointed when Mazda offered the Grand Touring trim (leather, moonroof, tech package) with a manual transmission for 2013. Oh, well. Great car nonetheless, and a lot less weight!
