what up guys and gals?
first off im corey and im holdin it down up here in MN. Jus bought an MSP, yellow with 59k miles. clean as hell and to be honest, quite impressed. I come from the dsm clan- owned about 5 total eclipses but my most prized possession was my 98 gsx.... anyone who knows about dsms know there fast with very little dough- mods included a fully built 6 bolt block and a 1g head with a 5angle valve job. gt35 turbo spearco FMIC 770cc injectors and tuned to 26lbs... much more mods but as many of you know- mod lists are more like a novel with some vehicles. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and hope to look for helpful advice as well maybe make some new friends.

No, I'm Corey, your an imposter. Na j/k. Welcome I to had DSM's, but no to the magnatude of your. I had a 92 Eclipse and a 92 Talon back in high school. Fun car until the tranny goes then goes again. Anywho, welcome and enjoy your MSP.

proud to hear another true builder has made the wise move of leaving DSMs behind. personally, I'd love to have one... as long as I had something else to drive when it was broken. lol. I'm *most likely* pickin up an MSP this summer.. keepin my fingers crossed that nothing better comes up while I'm savin up for my down payment. lol

lol dsm's to msp's... i've looked at a few of them(msp's), nice and extremely rare car, i did soooo much research and i really wanted an msp cuz i wanted to stay with the mazda family, but i couldnt have enough for one... and now im in the market for a dsm, even a 420a with a turbo lol

welcome to the MSP lots of great info and people here that are always willing to help. Check out the locations page there are a few of us here from MN

you must like fixing cars

Its what I do lol, like that valvoline commercial, mon- fri i call it work, sat and sunday i call it fun. But no really, the dsms aren't as bad as everyone makes them seem. Granted yes, they have a vast amount of problems, but most times its due to dumbasses trying to go fast and not doing it right and/ or skipping out on important details. Im a FIRM believer on when you want to mod a car, ok fine, BUT before you do anything, you really need to make sure your car is ready- replace belts, weak gaskets, fluids, ya know just the mait. stuff. But thanks for the warm welcomes anyway, 1st order of business, whats the fastest track times ppl have around here? looking for some sort of comparison!!

Slower than a bolt on 16g gsx.. Dont expect too much performance from these cars..

No, didn't expect this car to come close to my old gsx, but what I was getting at is any car can be made respectable with hard work, vast knowledge of how everything works and not buying a ton of parts- just the ones you need. Of course along with upping the boost and such, tuning becomes HUGE as im sure you guys know this.

parts are probably where you're gonna get a lot of your gains. theres a few restrictive points on these cars, and then you gotta tune for the new parts.. you can basically take it as far as you want.

welcome buddy - I used to own a '95 automatic GS-T. Boy was that a fun car. Problem was (with 100,000 miles on the motor) I always felt like the car would break down (since I was the 3rd owner of it and not sure how the other 2 treated the car). And needless to say the transmission went up...Not fun paying 2,500 dollars to get it fixed. Needless to say I found an MSP at an ok price. I kinda like it - I understand it's not as fast as the DSM's but I believe looks are better in the long run.

I think you will like the MSP - CONGRATS!

Thats not what I was comparing it to.. I was comparing it to a 16g'd gsx, not a 35r gsx.. The fastest 3rd gen protege is in the high high 11s I believe, which really isnt all that fast IMO..

Welcome to the Mazda Community, my name is miguel: you made a good desicion, the Mazdaspeed Protg is a great car, you just need to spend some cash to fix the weak spots in it, but once you have you'll be in love with these car for ever.. by the way these car have mad potential if you put the right parts and if you do it right from the first time.. i just don't understand how can people say these cars and engines don't make power or are not fast enough, if you believe on her, she will believe on you and make you the happiest Mazda owner in the World !!!!

Ummm.. They arent fast.. Considering the fastest 3rd gen is only in the 11s.. Thats not very fast for a 'performance car', no matter what it was intended for..

of course they are not going to be fast with simple mods, don't spec too much with a CAI, FMIC, Hard Pipes, Coilovers Etc. you need to invest a considerable amount of money to make these little toys into real mean machines. my question is why do you have one ? a 11 second's daily driving Street Car is fast ass hell, don't matter what you say, now if you are talking about a drag racing car yes 11 second is not impressive at all, but owning a 11 second's daily driving street car sure is something to be aware off on the streets !!!! by the way, what car is fast for you ? just curious ?

Simple bolt ons arent going to get an msp into the 11s.. Hell, for most people, it takes forged internals to get into the 12s.. I can think of more performance oriented cars that dont need to build (by build I mean forged internals) their motor to run 11s than those that do.. A fast car to me is one that runs 10s or traps over 125 and Ive yet to see a 3rd gen protege do that.. Street/strip, it doesnt really matter.. A slow car doesnt become fast just by being able to drive it on the street.. Ever heard of the pump gas drags? The cars that get invited to that are FAST! 7-8 second cars that run on 93 octane and can be driven on the street..

Ok I see where your coming from, but how many of those cars do you actually see on the streets? I can tell you right now the fastest car I know on the streets at least around my area, is a high ten low 11 94 civic hatch with a built h22. Again I understand where your coming from completely, its just some cars take a little more time, tweaks and money to become fast. Give it time I am sure someone will find a KILLER set up and we'll see the very first protege in the tens if not under.... and even so.. 11s? Who can complain about that for a DD... its not about whos the faster overall... its about the fun of the build, pride in your ride, and making YOUR car faster than the rest in its class. Not hating on anyone just to clarify! lol

You'd be surprised at how many 9-10-11 sec cars are daily driven or street legal around here.. And I see them quite often too.. I could name at least a dozen or so and then there are the people I dont know..
