Alright, i need some help. Complete Newb at sound systems and I am wanting to try a sub woofer and amp. Crutchfield has this Alpine 500-watt Dual 12" Bass Package (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_700MRPEBB/Alpine-500-watt-Dual-12-Bass-Package.html#details-tab) on as a complete package and the price seems great for me. I am not looking for a high end system just something to improve what I have. Currently my head unit is Pioneer (DEH-22000UB). It is a pretty basic head unit and I was wondering if someone could tell me if this combo would work, and how you determine that also?
From what I understand is that it has a 2 preamp voltage which is low. Will the bass package above be worth while or will it suffer due to lack of power and output?

Any advice would be nice as I really don't have a clue.
Thanks again!

So I have also been wanting to upgrade my head unit to something more advanced. I was looking at the Clarion cx501 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020CX501/Clarion-CX501.html#details-tab. Anyone have any insight on this deck? most of the reviews seem to be saying good things. It has u much higher RMS so i expect the Clarity and sound of the music to be much better. One big difference I noticed was that it has 6 preamp channels rather than just 2. So that gives me more options for hooking up a bass unit (subs and amps)?
Major appreciation for any advice!!

looks like a solid unit. the 6 preamp channels is handy for the future. and it is 2006ces compliant (which means its power ratings are real)

the biggest help imo, is the HP crossovers. you can use those to cut sub bass out of your speakers that they shouldn't be playing anyway. this helps them make better use of the power they do have.

do your research on crutchfield and buy from sonixelectronics, vminnovations or techronics, even 3kings audio way cheaper than crutchfield

The advantage to Crutchfield is customer support. They will include installation instructions, dash kits, and wiring harnesses for free. They have 24/7 support if you have trouble installing your equipment and they offer full manufacturers warranty on all the products they sell. Many other online vendors are not authorized for online sales and will not help you when things break.

As for the OP's headunit upgrade questions, don't bother upgrading a head unit just to get more power. You'll get more for your dollar by installing an external amplifier to power your mids and highs. Even a 25 watt RMS per channel external amp will produce cleaner sound than the internal chip amp on a head unit.
