I have just changed the rear discs and pads as they were down to 1mm on the offside and metal to metal on the nearside rear. I am surprised at such a low mileage and mainly motorway driving. Has anyone else experienced this low mileage brake problem. I would expect at least 35-40K from the initial pair at the rear?

It all depends, on how much you are using them.
I see people riding on the brakes, or push them constantly, they will have the same issue.
My wife with her Honda CRV, is almost at 70k miles and she still has the original brake parts.

There is a known problem with early '13 and '14 rear brakes. There is a TSB regarding the problem of early corrosion in cold climates where salt is used to treat icy roads. My rotors were replaced at 32k miles. The new rotors have been reengineered.

At ~10,000 mine were at 90% according to the dealer's own up-sell worksheet.

Last week I started hearing metal on metal when breaking. I live in Maine and we are getting plenty of snow and cold. It's a 13 model year at 33,500 when I had the issue. Took it to the dealer and they were able to replace everything under warranty after approval from their Mazda rep. The shop manager told me I needed to have the brakes cleaned out and serviced every 15k miles to prevent this which seems ridiculous. Looking at the invoice, they referenced TSB 04.003.14. Doing a little research it seems a lot of people are having the same issue. I hope the new parts they put on are designed to prevent this. My front brakes are perfectly healthy.

Supposedly, the new brake have been reengineered. You are lucky with the warranty. My dealership tried several times, but was unable to refund my brake replacement at 35k miles. They did agree to two free oil changes/rotations which is worth about $150. Better than nothing...
