2002 Mazda Protege 5 - Red
Hello everyone, I'm a 22 year old from near Chicago, IL, I'm a complete car newb, I've driven a 1994 ford ranger since I was 16, recently I got rear ended, got some decent money out of my totaled truck. Being a poor college student, I wanted something somewhat affordable used, a little sportier than a truck, yet still had some room for road trips, good MPG, and was reliable since I'm graduating in May, and will most likely be commuting.

I did my research and the P5 fit! Ive had it a few weeks, and was waiting to post a pic for a nice day to clean it, but ahh what the hell, its a little dirty from the day we drove it back and the weeks ive owned it (slushy crap snow and all that), but here it is! I named it Knuckles (video game fans will get the name haha)

I think I got screwed as far as price, but I didnt care, I was tired of researching and wanted a car (2002, $6500 out the door, 86,000 miles, friggin dealership). But it was super clean, no scuffs, scratches, barely any rust, that I saw, interior perfect, had an alpine cd/mp3/ipod connectivity deck custom installed, and drives and handles like a dream.

Man, its so much more fun to drive after only driving a boring truck for 5 years, holy crap can this thing hug the corners. First thing ill do is probably ask a friend for advice buying/installing a sub, its wired for bigger sound already which is good, because as I said, I know jack about cars. Sooo yea, I'm very happy with it and am just saying hello to all the fellow P5'ers!

P.S. I wonder if this is anyone on heres old one? haha

Looks clean. Your price wasn't too horrible and if its been cared for it will cost you very little to drive well over the 100k mark.

Manual or auto?

Welcome!(wiggle)

Sharp looking P5. I love stock chrome wheels.

I thought you did good on price. I paid just under $7K out the door at a dealer for a black 03 with 86K miles, 5spd, all the options and flawless in and out.

Automatic, like I said im not really that much of an enthusiast, and while I hear manual is just sooo much better and really feels like you have way more control of the car, this one's price was the cheapest, looked the cleanest, and was the best deal in the area. (still had to drive 2 hours).

I get s*** for not even knowing how to drive manual (esp from the gf, who knows how to), but eh, ill learn someday haha. I really want to learn, but I just dont have the time with the crazy near graduation college + job + gf + partying, etc.

wait....wait...wait.....did i hear that right....your gf was giving you s*** for not knowing how to drive a manual......(spank)(evil)

Yeah you heard me. Knew id get s*** for it. Dig in everyone lol.

ha.....well lemme go get my big shovel and boots on........

i always thought that driving a stick was a boy's right of passage, oh well i guess you drew the short straw huh

I know it. Dad just never got around to finishing it. I have the general idea down, dad taught me a bit in his bmw z3, we just never finished, and like i said, this was the car for me right now. No complaints so far after 3 weeks. Almost took it on a 13 hour trip from il to fl, but didnt want the miles, made my dad take his suv. Im loving filling it up way less than my old truck and now im always offering to drive the roomates to the store and stuff lol.

nice....and it's a great ride....lower the bad boy and then really enjoy the handling....

Lol...I should break out the other welcome pic I have...it is about 4 times as big...I just like it...cause nobody else does it...

Strange that we all opt out of the fairy welcome banners...hmmm...lol

I love how every newbie here gets this daunting and quite frankly scary glitter monster

Some new pics after a wash, noticed some scuffs on the front bumper I didnt notice before, but all in all, I'm still loving this thing, and as far as my area (central IL) I've only seen a few others around, one blue, one silver, one red with a busted bumper, kind of cool to drive a car that isnt freakin everywhere...

wtf man, i want a damn glitter monster, i never got one... but then again, i can't see it due to this bad Internet connection! yay deployment.....

Man should've went manual. I heard the auto is a slushbox. Anyhow, nice looking car, looks like it's been cared of (exterior at least). Hope you enjoy it! Keep us posted.

yeah....manual = fun in these lil cars.......dealer gave me a 'loaner' p5 with the sport auto and HUGE difference
