im assuming dx, because i looked at the comparisons between the models, and the ex and lx have power windows and other features, mine is basic everything
i got it for 2 grand from a friend, which is a preety good price for the car, and yes, it is a salvaged title

she has blown rear speakers, i cant even hear the front speakers, the engine mounts are going out (but not in a bad shape yet), paint faiding on hood, i have only owned the car for 4 days (i havent even had time to finish putting it in my name) and some idiot in a parking lot gave me a little scratch on the front bumper drivers side corner, although the previous owner was a girl who didnt use it as a beater, there are stains on the headliner, and burn marks right over the cigaratte tray, also the little red airbag button is flashing, anyone know what that means? do i have an airbag or not?

i think its a preety good purchase, and im loving the gas milage so far, i have gone around 250 miles (im approximating in my head) and have just gone below the half tank mark
which is awsm considering i do a bit of comuting

the engine is of course, a 1.6 105 hp, which is dissapointing with an automatic transmittion

so...what can i do without sacrificing (possibly adding) milage?

i have once read that adding hotwires (for the ground) improves it, along w/ intake and exhaust (headers, etc), but i was just wondering, how much more power would basic upgrades give me?

a little info about me, i live in san fransisco bay area and i go to school and sell cell phones; i have owned (and still own) an 88 celica gt-conv, and this car is its replacement, or just an addition, i dont know yet, i have recently signed up for the scca and plan to use the celica
now, i dont know how this car is, but the celica is just impressive when it comes to longevity, mine has 345k miles and all it needs is basic maintenence, although it does have its share of problems from getting beat on (mostly cosmetic, and also an oil leak that noone knows where it comes from)
during my ownership of the celica, i have fallen in love w/ manual transmitions, they are just so much fun...
the protege is my 4th car, the first was a saab 900 turbo convertible, which ended up to be totalled and donated, the second very well kept 82 civic hatch which ended up getting stolen (ended up 3 states away), the third, i have already mentioned the celica

i will post pictures after i clean the car this weekend

nice to meet all of you, call me alex

hey man, whats up, dont worry you will always be the person who dosent care about his car in my eyes
whats up is i washed/waxd the car but have been busy causing error codes to pop up, about to go to get em scanned at autozone, catch you later

CAI yeilds on average 3-7HP, SRI usualy is more around 2-4HP. Yeilds might be different for our proteges, but that's a basic yeild for any car.
a complete Manifold straight piped to axel back 3" tubbing exhaust system *might* give you about 8HP non-boosted, but probaly less. The good thing is that all of the above is going to increase gas milage. The only possible problem is with the headders and exhaust system, if your state has strict emmissions laws you might not wana go the headder route, since it eliminates your primary cat coverter, ken @ protegegarrage offers metal core cat(which still work and keeps backpressure down) mid-pipes for cat-back exhaust systems though, so that's not a problem on that end. Some people have even been able to pass emissions tests after running their car for a while during the day, based on the theory a "warmed up" single cat can almost make up for the loss of the primary cat.

I don't wana get ahead of myself, but the next thing after that out be a VICS-less air mani, which runs about $270-300 and usualy yeilds 8-15+HP, depending on a boosted or not car.

if the car is running the stock auto tranny I'd be willing to bet money on it'll be needing replacing in the next 10-20K miles, unless the car's been driven like some 90year old on sunday. the 3rd gen's protege's have a fairly weak auto tranny, some people have switched out theirs 3 times in less than 60-70K. If you wana really keep this car, you want a manual.

hey, welcome!

street unit has a full line of all types of products for your car. click the link in my sig to get there, if you have a question about a specific product let me know and ill be glad to help you!

as far as aftermarket things, sephiroth said it pretty good. i have a CAI, header, exhaust, and wires...all added power and helped out on gas (until i did some other things for more power) but id say those are the easy "bolt-on" things to start with.

like i said im here to help you if you have any questions about something to do to your car
