New owner - Couple Questions

Hey everyone - First time posting.

I just bought an 02 Protege5. So far I love it, but there are few things wrong with it that I need some advice on.

1 - It appears the windshield wiper fluid does not shoot out. I checked, and there is plenty of fluid in the reservoir, but nothing is coming out. Also, it looks like the rear wiper does not work at all. My guess is it's a pump. Any other ideas? If it is a pump, how much would it be to replace?

2 - the parking brake light is on, even though its not pulled up. Is it something I should worry about? Recommendations for how to fix it?

3 - I have a feeling this car at one point had a keyless entry, but the dealer did not have it. Is there anyway I could tell, and if so, could I order a new one?

thanks in advance,
Zach

1- i have no clue lol

2- if your brake light is on in the dash then either your brake fluid is low or the sensor in the e-brake or fluid resevior is bad

3- all P5s had keyless entry, you can get remotes off of ebay and reprogram them to your car.

Has anyone else bought a remote from e-bay and programmed it? It doesn't look too difficult to do, but I do worry of people on e-bay.

I had the instructions on how to reprogram one...let me look into it...

and basically any one of them will work that you find on ebay for a protege...

Start:
1999-2003 Protege OEM Keyless Entry Code Change How-to
The following is a how-to on changing the security codes on the remote and keyless entry module in case you are either paranoid or having problems with your keyless entry.

1. Make sure there are no keys in the ignition and that all doors are closed
2. Open driver's side door
3. Insert key into ignition switch and cycle the key between the ON and LOCK positions 3 times
4. Remove key from ignition switch
5. Push the driver's side door sensor switch 3 times
6. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock.
If nothing happens, wait 40 seconds and start from step 3 again
7. Press any button on any transmitter twice
8. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
9. If you have only 1 remote, press any button on that remote twice.
If you have 2 or 3 remotes, press any button on any of the other remotes twice.
10. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
11. If you have 1 or 2 remotes, press any button on either remote twice.
If you have 3 remotes, press any button on the 3rd remote twice.
12. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
13. The codes should now be reprogrammed

Note A:
1. Hold down the driver's side door sensor switch
2. Verify that the doors lock and unlock twice
3. Start from step 3 again

If you start working on 1 remote, finish working with that 1 remote until you're done reprogramming it!!!
End

Has anyone else bought a remote from e-bay and programmed it? It doesn't look too difficult to do, but I do worry of people on e-bay.

PM Autoxes.
He recently bought one from ebay for his protege and programmed it. He says it's fairly easy, just ridiculous to do. You practically have to jump through hoops.

wow, i'm really slow today
congrats on the car btw.

Thanks - I'm excited to have it. my old car was a 97 honda accord. I was sad to sell it, but we needed a vehicle that was a lot bigger to handle our new puppy.

Now is just making sure everything is functional and working.

Here is another question I just thought of. I went to put my license plate on the back, and the screw holes are way off. It's not like it's a little off, but it is way off. Anyone have suggestions? Is there a bracket I can buy?

there's no black bracket on there? It has a black bracket thats supposed to be there to mount a license plate....where the hell did you buy this car lol

Welcome aboard!! I can help with 1 and 3

1. Order a set of Mazda Tribute washer nozzels for $8 each from onlinemazdaparts.com More than likely they're gunk'd up inside. Mine didn't work either when I bought the car.

3. The Protege 5 remotes on Ebay do work. I ordered 1 for myself to use on my wife's car. Programing is not that hard. Follow the posted directions above.

The tag bracket thing is a pain. I don't know what Mazda was thinking when they put the holes for the tags on the back. I had to drill holes in my tag to mount it cause mine didn't come with a bracket either. Finally just ordered one from a member parting out his car in the "For Sale" section. Now my car looks OEM now instead of ghetto. You can get it new for I think $35 from onlinemazdaparts.com as well

Now, pull up a chair and empty your wallet lol

Pro5x2 - Thanks for the info. The washer nozzles - How hard are those to replace? Where are they located at?

I think I'm going to stop by an Autozone during my lunch break to see what ideas they may have. It's very strange!

you can purchase the washer nozzles from one of our mazda parts vendors here on the site for a bit cheaper or you can get them from any mazda parts counter at a mazda service department.

Part# EC016750YA MSRP-8.81ea Website-7.05ea

That from onlinemazdaparts.com who is an approved vendor for the forums.

To get them off, pop the hood and trace the washer lines up in the hood.

Pull them off of the nozzels by pulling down

Once hose is disconnected, take a 10mm socket, possibly deep socket, I don't remember and press up inside where the hoses came out and pull from the top to remove the nozzels.

To install, just snap the new ones in and reconnect the tube. Painless and gives a mist spray across the windshield instead of a pee stream

And the tag bracket is not the Universal fit you can pickup at the local auto parts store. Trust me, tried em all

They're $25 new from onlinemazdaparts.com

+1 on the Ebay keyless remote.

When you get one for $30 and see how easy it is to program, you will see how criminal the $75 + $labor dealership charge is.

Pro5x2 - Thanks for the part number for the washers.

However, I was unable to find the license plate bracket on the page. I could find the front plate one, but not the back.

So I think the car gods are against me in my purchase :)

After test driving the car, and taking it to a dealer, I am finding many things wrong with it.

First, While driving this evening, one of my low beam lights burnt out. I figured, no problem - I'll just replace it. So I stop by napa and buy a bulb. I install it, but it still doesn't work. After looking further, it looks as though the socket that the bulb sits in has some corrosion around it. It appears I'll have to replace the wire bracket that the bulb sits in. Great...

Then, I noticed that one of my fog lights doesn't work either. It appears as though the cover is busted off. So I'll probably have to replace the whole bulb.

Then, aside from the parking break being turned on, the ABS light is turned on too.

it's just amazing how much it has fallen apart in just one day :( very frustrating!

Any kind of return type policy w/ the dealer you bought it from? Sounds like you picked up a bad one...

These are minor problems that the previous owner let accumulate. I think you can get on top of them in a couple of weeks work. My main concern would be of whether this indicates other poor maintenance - timely oil changes sure come to mind. Did you do a compression check? Any exhaust smoke?

I took it to a friend mechanic of mine before I bought it, and according to him everything looked great.

And I think you're right - I think that they are all minor problems that can be resolved. I just wish I would have known about them/been told about them.

But, we'll take one at a time. First the headlight. From looking at it last night, it looks like I will need a new bracket. Does that make sense? Has anyone else had to change those?
