New MSP Short-Ram Intake

One of the first obvious upgrades for a car like this would be an intake. The stock intake is made out of plastic with a couple of nasty bends (to accomodate the stock airbox). Just slapping on a cone filter yielded worse performance sitting in the path of the fans. Surprisingly I couldn't find any short-ram intakes for this car. Personally, I would not put a cold-air intake on a turbo car. My T25 wouldn't appreciate me sicking a 90 degree bend between it and it's air. :) So, a friend of mine who owns Billet Design, a performance shop specializing in custom work, set out to make me an intake. Below is the awesome result:

The pictures of it installed were before it was painted silver. As you can see, the design is very free flowing and the filter sits against the fender away from the fans. I noticed a big difference with this intake, and the sound of it is just sweet. The BPV is loud and flutters less (definitely doesn't sound like a turkey). I'm very happy with the outcome.

For those interested in a short-ram intake, Billet Design is happy to make it available to other MSP owners. I'll have to get approved as a forum vendor first, before I can start taking orders for Billet. But I thought I would take this time to show you guys the intake and see who would be interested. The steel intake, painted in your choice of high-temp silver or black, will include the necessary rubber hose fittings, BPV tubing, hose clamps, filter (larger than the one pictured), breather line, and a bracket for relocating the coolant tank. Priced nicely at $200.

Here's a video of it on my car @ 9.5psi,

Looks Nice!
Nice to see someone else making an advancement in the MSP community!
Matt:p ;) ;)

Are there any problems w/ heat soak? And will there be any dyno#?
Other than that it looks great!!!!(thumb)

it looks awesome, I wonder what type of gains to expect vs the INJEN system, your only talking about a $20-30 difference in price.

and compared to the spool CAI..which is 185 shipped..

And ION has a CAI for right around the same price like 180-190. All these different intakes gets to be a little confusing, wish there were more actual power gains to compare each one against.

I want dealers/vendors to start showing before/after dyno sheets before they say their part does this and that.

only in a perfect world I guess.

I know just looking at the picture of the intake pipe itself doesn't convey the price well, you have to remember there's a lot of materials that are needed.

2 Steel Bends
3 Additional Steel Pipes
10 Hose Clamps
3 Rubber Fittings
1 Breather Line
1 Filter
2 BPV Hoses
1 Bracket
Argon, Paint, etc...

I think if we can get a 10 person group buy going, $200 per intake kit is an excellent price.

You guys can keep thinking a CAI is better, but go look on any other turbo car forum and see what kind of intakes they're using. Whether it's a Supra forum, a WRX forum, a DSM forum, or a RX7 forum... 99% of them use short-ram intakes. Look at the AEM CAI application list. It's a product mainly produced for naturally aspirated Civics, Integras, Preludes, Cavaliers, etc. We don't need it. You shouldn't sacrifice airflow. We have an intercooler. :)

Videos are coming soon. :) Just need to put them on the PC.

I hope people don't buy products based on a horsepower rating.

You're missing the point of the modification. Don't think the point of the part is for it's peak horsepower figure. Think of it for it's purpose. The basic physics of it. Different modifications affect different rpms.

If you've ever even been to a dyno, you should realize how the runs vary so much. It's not a perfect system that shoots out a perfect number each time.

very nice...very nice indeed :D i kinda wish i waited a little while. but oh well, my injen is scheduled for delivery on thursday! but i think you're the first person to post a vid of their intake in action. been waiting for someone to do that (thumb). and geez, the bpv does sound like a turkey!! but i kinda like it :) gobble gobble!

Does having a bend in the intake really make such a big difference? Wouldn't the advantage of colder air (CAI) outweight the advantage gained by a shorter, non-bent intake (this Short Ram)?

just so you know, most dsm's don't use a cai just because of the location of the stock intercooler piping and the location of the stock filter. a lot of the fmic kits they make for them keep piping in the same location, which is right in front of the filter, so there is nowhere to put a cai. many people who have taken a different route with their piping to use a cai, with the pipe going into the hole where the stock intercooler piping used to go. granted, gains are going to be minimal, since the air is going to get heated right up anyway from being compressed, but there are gains to be seen from a cai even on a turbo. and dsm's that don't use a cai build a heat shield around their filter, since the entire engine bay gets hot from the turbo, and their setup is basically the same as ours, just with the filter on the opposite side. if cold air didn't matter, why would people take out their headlights of their dsm's when they go to the track? cold air will help over warm air, but either way this is drawing air from a nice location (that hole below, or if needed during racing headlight removal) and would be a benefit. it's good to see there are alternatives out there though! i would just go with cold air since the option is very easy to accomplish, but a heat shield around there would also serve well.
