Hey everyone! I am new to the mazda scene so please excuse my ignorance. I just bought my first mazda yesterday and i happens to be a protege speed. Ive been looking at upgrading my stock BOV and getting a turbo timer. However would moving to an aftermarket BOV be wise with the stock snail? Honestly i just want more noise when i shift, but i dont want to compromise anything by changing.
So any suggestions, or words of wisdom are greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

WELCOME TO THE MSP REALM

Here is what i did for mine, im a new owner too, 3 weeks, I installed a short ram intake DIY style, the 60 degree bend from autozone, some silicone couplers and a 2.75 in neck filter(if you PM ill send pics of it, really easy). It flutters really nice, and i was at the track tonight and some people in the stands said it sounded nice. The stock airbox has a silencer in it. with the short ram though its the kind of flutter you might like, kinda like the movies sort of flutter, and as for messin with the BOV..... DONT, I know its tempting to unhook one end of the BPV to hear it, but thats how I broke the plasic neck on my hot pipe. Plus if you go the atmospheric route, the ECU accounts for the air that comes from the BPV so if you vent outside, then the ECU throws too much fuel at the motor and it dies.

and my greddy turbo timer has worked perfectly. just takes some wireing skills.

But find a local shop, have them make a hot pipe(mine cost me $85 installed)

then have a muffler shop (A GOOD ONE) make a downpipe to the mazdaspeed exhaust. our stock exhaust is funny, it is a MP3 exhaust width from the turbo halfway down the car then it widens out (weird) but this local shop here is making me some 2.75inch from the turbo back, eliminating one cat, and having it go straight to the stock tip, for a straight pipe SRT4 style sound. I unhooked the axle back to hear it to make sure I would like it, but the cackle is too hard to not like, im having a shop do it cuz you cant order a straight pipe with only resonator.

And then there is the wastegate spring boost controller DIY, there are mixed feelings about this on the forum, saying dont, some say do, my ecu is one of the BUM ones that dumps fuel, so i am safe, or at least my stoich says so. but if your speed is FINE and doesnt drop off at 1 psi of boost or higher(feels like your towing something at full throttle

these are budget ideas that WORK, but are no means like the HIGH dollar items out there, but im guessing you just dropped a big down payment to buy the MSP too, I know I did. BUT I do have plans, almost there. (FMIC, AEM EMS, RODS, PISTONS im budgeting to buy all at once)

in closing.....turbo timer GOOD, BPV > BOV(dies)
I'll take some pics of the short ram for you, its a CLEAN install if done right($38.25 at autozone)

Oh wow thank you very much for your response!

So ultimately rather than changing the BOV it is a better idea to upgrade the bypass valve?Just curious but what harm does changing the factory bov do?

If you replace the stock BPV for a BOV then the car wil have stalling issues. These cars run off a MAF as you can see and the air the BOV would vent is metered air, so that wuill cause stalling or driveability issues. Go through and read up on the stickies, there is a lot of good info there for new owners. Welcome, oh and where are you from unless I missed that.

search "dual setup" -- that will give you a good bit of information about how you can run a bov. It's either that, or you have to make custom hardpips and relocate the maf to between the throttle-body and the bov. if you just throw a bov on, the car will run bad and die on you after boosting. i wouldn't replace the stock bpv, that would just be throwing away money at the exact same part. it won't change anything but look pretty.

putting on a short-ram intake like the 1st guy said will definitely make the turbo much louder and sexier, and you'll hear the stock bpv very clearly. It makes more of a ''turkey'' sound kinda like the high-hp big turbo bits you've seen at the drag -- some people hate it, personally i think it's pretty damn cool.

wow thanks everyone for yor help! ill definitely look into the short ram intake. being new to mazda im also new to forced induction, but its starting to make sense =)
Oh and btw im from Vancouver, BC, Canada
thanks again

Here is what I did for my short ram, just under 40 us dollars. I dont know if you guys have an autozone there or not. but it is
one silicon coupler
60 degree elbow
2.75inch specter filter
and a drill to tap out the hole for the temp sensor. I drilled the hole on the round of the elbow, but i think it would be better to go a little more from the side seeming that it is a little close to the hood. still clears though, and as for the filter, the think fit so damn tight it didnt even need a clamp to hold it on, took a little finess to get it there, i think it looks better without the clamp though anyways. and who ever reads this, should i make a how to on this thing or not???
