New member/ p5 owner

I just bought a 02' P5 5spd from my brother for $1300 w/ 69,xxx on the clock. Its a clean car and I think at least, that I got it cheap- hes into the srt4's now so he was looking for an easy way to get it out of his garage and get a delta kit for his srt. Im more or less an avid CB7(90-93 accord) and gsxr enthusiast and rock a 92 ex and a 05'gsxr 600. The mazda will be a daily for me but there's one catch..... the trans wont shift. So ya, I'll be the noob asking questions about that soon enough after I search here high and low. The car is otherwise near flawless, no rust no dings, totally stock with the exception of a K&n filter in the factory air box. Its been sitting dormant in his garage in texas for over a year before I had it shipped to me here in FL yesterday. I think it may need a battery we'll see. Other than that heres a crappy snapshot of it for now. And if you can lead me to the right "5spd blues thread" before I find it that would be awesome!

$1300?!?! That's a steal! Good find, doesn't look bad at all considering how much you paid for it.

Yup, im working on figuring the trans out right now, looks like i might be screwed however, I'm not sure of that yet. The clutch works, I though these cars would have shifter cables- and that i may need a shifter bushing or something but nope. this car has a shifter rod if you will- and i just inspected it...its all intact. So, I'm thinking its either bent shift forks, or the shift selector thingy if that's what its called. I have yet to find a thread to explain this further...the search gos on! I wonder how much a 02' 5spd trans runs used.....lol

I was gonna suggest to check the shift linkages but if you say they're fine, guess thats not it. Did your brother mess the trans up or did he buy it that way?

Oh, and a used 5spd trans goes for $400 depending

I think he horsed into second one day (from the story I heard) and its now stuck there. the shaft selector thingy seems to work, it twists and pulls in and out fine, I cant get it into neutral.

Man, for $1300, even if a new tranny and the labor for a swap is $1000, you still made out like a bandit.

Thats why i bought it. couldn't have gone wrong. And the car is VERY clean too. Its also loaded, but I think all P5's are-only option is A/T or M/T and color....I think. Im gonna drop the trans and sent it to my boy @ ammco. Then I can go from there. Only thing i can do now is buff the headlights, polish and wax it. Now wheres that pdf service manual?.......lol

lol

Actually, the "loaded" p5s had sunroof and leather seats, both add on options. Other than that, the p5 itself was already loaded compared to the regular proteges such as a DX.

Another white P5 to the ranks. I'm super jealous of the deal you got. Get that trans fixed and get to zoomin.

You couldn't even get leather on the 02s so your P5 is loaded. Mine only has the sunroof, ABS and side airbags as options.

You couldn't? Didn't know that, and now looking back all p5s on here that did have leather were 03s. Cool, learn something new everyday.

So yeah, you got a 69,xxx mile fully loaded 02 p5 for $1300, which probably ran $17,000 brand new and is worth about $8,000ish now(with working trans lol)

bomb ass deal.

Yup, zoom zoom zoom. I drove this same car back in 07' when my bro was @ my parents house for xmas. It handles better than everything i have been in (short of one of my buddies M3's) -its really neutral for a fwd. Feels better stock then any koni or illumina shod civic i have driven from my recollection. I do remember that its not a rocket ship but will be awesome for a daily. I'll probly throw some stuts and springs on it, tint it, and perhaps even a system like the one in my accord. But for now, i gave it the once over, oil change/filter, the brakes look good, cleaned the k&n, gonna have to get tires soon. wheel bearings/ front end seems tight, and just a good detail. damn trans, and the cost of a tag....ugh FL is expensive now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like everyone else said that's a steal and a half of a deal you got! As for a trans, just keep looking around. I found a used 5spd from a MP3 for $100 and it still works...or at least it appears to, I am in the middle of taking mine out right now (should be outside doing that lol) but just look around on here and look around the larger junk yards/salvage yards. I know a lot of places have "cash for clunkers" cars at them and you may get lucky and find a tranny for real cheap there. Good luck!

if you guys dont mind me asking, what trany's will swap into a p5? (5spd's)

Any 01-03 protege trans long as it was with the 2.0 motor, whether is be a protege, p5, mp3 or msp.

The msp trans with have a lsd instead of a open diff which is nice, but bolts up the same.

Oh, and I was also told the trans made in the later 02 year and on have stronger components than the earlier years do.

Thanks man, I see alot of 1.8 trans, the 2.0...not to much on ebay at least. Ol' boy at amcco said if i bring him the trans, hell open it up and check it out for free. Not to many things could be wrong with a manual trans....lol
