New member from Vancouver

Hello all, new member and new owner of an '02 Protege 5, 5spd. I figure most people like pictures, so..

Unfortunately it was owned by a smoker, which was its first owner and this happened due to it, I'm the 3rd owner now. He made trips from chilliwack to downtown vancouver daily, so about 200km's/day, so this is the result:

That's KM's, not miles. She's in pretty decent shape for her mileage, runs well and timing belt/clutch was done recently. Has a bit of what I think is a low idle, but maybe it's normal, will have to check the manual out.

Anyway from what I've seen on here so far (done a bunch of searching for various items) this is a pretty good community, with lots of how to's and whathaveyou. Hopefully I'll be able to stick around and learn a bunch!

Plans for the car aren't too major, just a few minor things here and there. Looking at intake (short ram most likely, rainy as heck in vancouver), exhaust (cat back, magnaflow or racing beat from what it sounds like) and coilovers/wheels. It's a shared car between me and my girlfriend of almost 4 years so everything has to be girl-friendly to a point

Welcome to the forums! Do a search on how to clean your IAC and EGR... this could very well be the solution to your idle problem, as most here have it.

Sweet! thanks for the advice! I don't think the search feature likes the 3 letter queries because it keeps returning no results, but I found the EGR in the how to section and enough about the IAC to get it done. I'm going to try that out today along with a few other tune up bits.

I am planning on replacing the headliner, has anyone actually torn off the material from the backing? I've found threads of people removing/painting them, but I haven't found any of completely redoing them.

On that note, I also haven't been able to find how to remove the trim piece/headliner material off of the sunroof panel, maybe I just overlooked that in the roof rack how to.

Nice, I love the roof rack delete cars, (although in Canada i think they all came that way). Wow that headliner is NASTY.

Instead of replacing, maybe you could try removing it and cleaning, then dyeing it black?

I'm more into the replacement due to getting the horrid smoke smell out of it, although I'm sure it's in alllll of the upholstery it might help seeing as that's the most affected area.

Changed the oil/filter today as well as the spark plugs, old ones had whiteish tinge to them which I guess is ok, better than sooty black anyway. I haven't worked on coil-on-plug cars before and was a little startled when the 2nd and 4th plugs didn't make a 'pop!' sound when coming out and flipped them over to see that they only had a little spring in them, but I suppose that's normal.

Also found that the cluster rattles at certain rpms, between 1800-2500ish, so I'm going to do some searching on that because it's flipping annoying in downtown traffic. As expected the car has noooooo jam at all, but I was aware of that before we got it.

Haha yeah I'm starting to notice that now! I've already got one project car so that's where most of the cash will go for now I think.

Took the car to Kelowna and back this weekend, if anyone has driven that road before, it's pretty damn steep in some places. Has an elevation change of 1750 meters (5700ft) over about 2 hours of driving, it's a real car killer. The car performed well, didn't have any hiccups and stayed nice and cool as far as I could tell.

just recently had my headliner redone.,and the shop tried to remove the old cover after a lot of wasted time in trying to remove it they just recovered the headliner with the black micro-suede i wanted, but they added a layer of foam to the headliner to help with sound proofing at the same time.

I inherited one of these last year (got married and the wife had one). Just replaced the cooling fan this weekend. I see alot of nicely modded P5s in the GVR.

Looking to get a SRI for it. Have you looked around to see if anyone sells decent ones locally?

Not yet, But I think I will be shortly, after returning from my 2 week vacation.

Car is having some fun idle issues but I haven't had any time to clean the egr out yet.

Also throwing a CEL for the rear exhaust sensor, will replace it when I get the cash/time for it! Anyone know decent online sources for the rear o2 sensor?
