MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Manager Steve Sanders stated, “Given the rules package, we needed to make a radical change to be able to match the competition. The current conditions and rules simply do not allow our rotary engine to have any competitive advantage, hence the move to piston power this season.”

The courage C65 was a 3yr old(used) chassis. It was old, slow and heavy. The engine development on the 3 rotor just wasnt there really. The new chassis will be a major step forward.
Racing is nothing but marketing showcase for the latest and greatest technologies using fast cars(think of audi with their diesel TDI technology used in the R10). The 3 rotor is based on a platform that really doesnt exist any more(IE: not very marketable). If there was a 3 rotor renesis in the pipes, maybe that would be used, but there isnt. By contrast the turbocharged MZR is a current engine one that has made headlines and gotten many accolades. Capitalizing on this in a racing environment is a sound decision.
Lets have a commercial with an at speed mazdaspeed 3(or 6) zooming around laguna seca(owned by mazda) and then getting overtaken by the new lola and then get a shot of The backside of the new Lola sprinting off in the distance, maybe with some flames shooting out of the exhausts under shifting. Then a voice over saying.. "mazda...we race what you drive with"... Cue zoom-zoom music. Pure marketing genius.

(first) awesome idea
The overall LMP2 program is driven by Mazda engineering, as we use motorsports to help develop future advanced technologies with the potential to transfer over to our production vehicles.
