new mazda3 turbo kit?

I wouldn't suggest running without the intercooler. Sure you could save money and go lower boost, but why?

the focus guys are doing this and seeing decent #'s. just keeps the cost down a bit for those on a budget.

The exhaust i can see going without, but not the intercooler. Why risk your engine, and make it prone to detonation just because you don't have an intercooler?

I understand the budget concept. But in reality, if you can't afford to do it right, you probably shouldn't do it at all. and skimping on necessary things is not doing it right.

having the intercooler doesn't make it prone to have detonation... just people have no intercooler need to put it at a lower Psi thats all... If TUning is really good then detonation wouldn't be existed... I know cars that don't have intercoolers on there turbos and drive fine just at a lower psi...

if anyone wants to make some donations to me to ensure that this is in my car the first of may, I wont be opposed! That way we can see some numbers, get some videos, etc....

Agreed with Sil. here's a couple dyno's from some focus duratec 2.0 kits. you can see you just run less boost without the FMIC and the numbers obviously reflect it. but the non intercooled kit has been running strong for a while now, no issues at all. also a dyno of the 2.3 non intercooled kit on the Fusion's 2.3 (can get a bit more out of it i think, was a rush for SEMA)

also, mazda's seem to squeeze a bit more from the ford's top end, so the numbers would show a bit lower than a similar system on the mazda. also, this is with a tuner rather than a standalone, not that that is a huge difference anywhere but cost.

OK, it is possible to run without an intercooler, i understand that. I'm not stupid. BUT why have a standalone engine management system with the kit if you're just going to run low psi? It makes no sense. Thats exactly what this kit is coming with. A microtech standalone unit. And yes, it does make it more prone to detonation because intake air temps rise without the intercooler. Regardless of how much boost you run, a bad tank of gas could cause detonation because of the higher temps seen.

I've read through this thread, and I must say that I've gotta side with Jeph on the intercooler issue. If you're gonna spend that much money on a turbo kit with EMS, it would be stupid to delete the intercooler. The turbo is going to get really hot and on a warm day, there's a good chance you'll blow something up. If you're counting pennies to buy this kit, then obviously you won't be able to afford to fix anything if you blow it. Do it right the first time.

And yes, the lack of an intercooler will make the car more prone to detonation.

Thank you. (thumb)

Hey, no prob Jeph. If you're right, you're right.

I think people may misunderstand the function of an intercooler. It's not there JUST to cool the air. It's there to stabilize intake air temps as much as possible and keep them from fluctuating wildly. The lack of an intercooler will allow temps to rise and fluctuate throughout a much broader range which will wreak havoc on your tuning no matter how well it was done.

Yeah, theexhaust i can understand because thats something that can easily be upgraded later. I ran my stock tiny ass exhaust for 6 months or so. But I don't see this kit being engineered for "budget" users.

yeah, I doubt it will be made for lower budget applications, he may have some optional upgrades, but thats about it.

So Jeph, does that mean you finally have a new exhaust?

And I am guessing you all say no to the donations? but CWiLL got away with it! haha

I have an exhaust sitting in my room :) I gotta send it down because right now its 3" all the way back. EXCEPT there is a 2.5" reducer so you could bolt it up to the stock midpipe. It would be retarded to go 3" downpipe to 3" midpipe to 2.5" bottleneck to 3" catback.
I might have some spare change you can have :)

well at least you have something there! spare change? I am thinking about going downtown with my guitar one night and just playing on a corner with a hat for donations! haha.......or just going on state in my skimpiest skirt ;)

Yeah, you need some stupid permit to go downtown and play. My friend and i were going to do that, but you can't cause you can get a stupid fine. And the permit costs $100 or something ridiculous. You CAN go to temple square, and play there.

You're going to need a wig too now if you are going to go walk state...

haha, I wish mine was going over anywhere near what CWiLL's did!

Heh, well it'll be sweet to have a ton of boosted cars at meets. So get a new job, save up, and get on it.

well, for an update on this........

my relationship has gone sour with the guy who makes this kit. I dont think I will be bringing anymore info on this kit to the forums because the owner (who has proven to be quite immature and unprofessional) has refused to share information with me. I will, however, be bringing info on a new kit that Beau and I will be working on ;)
