My general manager at the dealership just got back from Mazda R&D in LA. He gave me the low down on the new MP3. It won't be called an MP3. The supposed HP will be in the 185-190 range. also the parts on the new one will be interchangeable with the our MP3s. oh and there won't be a Turbo on it, it'll be NA.

That would really kick ass, I really hope they don't change their mind between now and then. If this is the only production run of the MP3 ever, that would be awesome!! Especially when you think about the MP3 craze loosing it's luster as a novelty w/ the general public(I mean the mp3 format). I know the MP means Mazda Performance, but as a marketing tool they may not see this as being as powerful in the future. Just my 2 cents...

Hey guys, What kind of parts are in the new Protege that would make the hp 170 - 180? You also said that it could also fit in our cars, MP3s. That would be cool if all goes well, that means that our cars are able to reach that hp too. Again, what kind of parts are in the new Protege, and where can we find it?

:D

As far as the info is true. my best buddy is a general manager a t the dealership and just came brack from L.A. the # of HP don't quite sure yet but as the name being mp3 is going to change probably "(protege M3)". "Is not going to have turbo" just cause mazda can compete in the market w/ subaru which is an AWD and it would be expensive to market a product to a younger generation without actually spending big bucks. One more note there is going to be a new color and here is where you can check it out.Ballistic Unlimited

One more thing this is NOT a 2003 Protege is a 2000 and is the color mazda will me using for new protege M3(maybe).

Zoom Zoom Zoom

the first ones will be out between April and May. the color(note i said COLOR) will metallic orange. I suspect the HP will come from higher compression pistons, cams, and a further tuned ECU.

hmm.... I doubt if Mazda are really making a 190HP Protg. If the engine remains 2.0L, how are they going to boost up another 50HP without increase the displacement?
Anyway, this is great news, as we might able to become the Type-R killer.

Ocean, the current MP3 uses a 9.1:1 compression piston. if you increase the compression, you increase the HP put out by the engine. The new MP3 will NOT be tuned by Racing Beat, but instead by Mazdaspeed(so I'm told). we'll just have to see.

Malkavian: Hope you are right ;) . Do you know if this new protege will be limited just like the MP3 or not???

this is just my opinion....i DOUBT it will be called protege m3. i know you didnt say that thats the definite name for it but im just saying....

The new line of performance mazdas will be limited to a few dealerships. Supposedly the name of the new line is the Mazdaspeed line. only certain dealerships will be able to carry this line of mazdas(I think it has something to do with sales and demographics). I know that my dealership will carry the line and will will be the only one in the Hampton Roads area. Also I believe the dealership has to be just a Mazda dealer, none of the "10 dealerships in one building" thing.

where tha hell are u people getting this info from??...if your sources are true y doesn't MAZDA USA now about it??..u think that they may bring over the FS-ZE to bring the hp rate up???..thats the only way to brin the hp up if they are still gonna be usin the 2.0..s*** people can't even get close to 170 over here how would that become a type-r killer...which i would love since that is my competiton right now and i wanna beat that YELLOW bug sooooooo bad....my boy has the 2001 yellow...s*** is too quick for our lil mp3's..gets me very angry....but hey he spent a lil more on his car any way and his payments are far more than mine...guess i can laugh at him for that...hehe

It is very possible to get 190 hp without increasing the displacement. Is it likely...I don't think so. Many honda engines get 100 hp per liter by using vtec. Mazda could get the horsepower figures up by using some sort of variable valve timing. Will they or could they even? I have no idea. Just a thought. Jon.

Tha FS-ZE engine does have some type of variable valve timing...i am not sure what they call it..if u guys don't mind my ignorance why can they get 190 outta a car that has that and why cant we even come close to 170 without??..it doesn't make sense and it gets me very angry..i think the only mods to get our cars above 170 will be a turbo...sad to say but it sounds like our only option..that is if u want to be a TYPE-R killer or anything else in that range..so people i say lets get the promoting on for the turbo kits..

Check this out:

"Although the 2001 Protege just received a minor restyle, an all-new car is scheduled to replace it within the next two years. Both a sedan and hatchback version will be offered with a choice of either a 2.0-liter or 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine."

2.3L???? Hmmmm....

From edmunds.com

That's reminded me something. The base model Mazda6 will also equipped with a 2.3L engine. According to Mazda source, the 2.3L engine will put out 150 hp at 6500 rpm and 152 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm with value timing system.

If the performance Mazdas will be limited to a few dealerships, this is pretty much like the SVT of ford.

i am also aware of the 2.3 but they are sayin that it is gonna be the same engine..2.0..wow the 2.3 only puts out 150 stock...not much of a diffrence really...but the valve timing i guess i what counts...can some explain that..

By the way, the concept MPS Miata is having a 2.0L 200PS engine. This makes more sense to me.
