2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Hey, i'm new on here. I have a 2003.5 MSP. I just have a couple questions. I am a mechanic, but i don't know much bout MSP's. I just would like to know which fmic is the best to buy, and what wastgate is the best, and also is anybody using blowoff valves or lettin it go atmosphere? If i could get some help that would be cool. I can also help with machanical stuff. Let me know. Nice forum too.

The wastegate in internal on the MSP turbo.

For sheer size the Perrin, for bang for buck go SMIC and pipes.

A BOV vents to the atmosphere anyway, you're running a recirculting a BPV on the stock setup.

are the smic the same hp gain, or is it just better than the stock? i don't mind spendin the extra for a fmic.... thanks for the help.

You're not going to see huge gains from a FMIC unless you start upping the boost. For the price, on a stock motor and stock boost a SMIC is going to yield you better results for the money spent.

Either way, you're improving on GARBAGE stock components, so you'll feel the difference no matter what.

so either way i need to upgrade other parts than just the intake and exhaust, to help with the turbo. What all do you have done to yours?

Just getting a new exhaust will net you the biggest gains on an otherwise stock MSP. It's really your call to get a new intake or new intercooler from there, from my experience on this board it's usually intake before intercooler upgrades.

This is, in my opinion, the ultimate MSP exhaust in production:

Then I think everyone should get a K&N filter, because it pays for it's self if you reuse it one time:
http://www.**********.com/KN_Filter_p/33-2134.htm

Past that, it's all up to you, man. I haven't done jack s*** to my car performance wise because I think the majority of people here know I want a Miata and every time I get money my cat needs a leg amputated or something. I have rode in **********'s MSP with GHL Exhaust and SMIC and it was like a new car, and not for what I believed to be an unreasonable amount of money or modifications. I think there's a limit (the M3 test) a person should spend or do on a car before it they hit diminishing returns.

Oh, and you can get a better 8" sub to put into the stock box in the trunk, and no, there's no 6x9"s in the back deck of the car.

This was discussed here already, and bascially I don't feel I'd be a good person if I killed my cat because I wanted a second car. I mean, he's my little buddy.

I can personally say that Cullen at **********.com has never steered me wrong, and I'm not sponsored or anything but he's pretty big on setting up Protege owners and making sure they buy the right parts the first time.

Horsepowerfreaks.com and Protegegarage.com are awesome too. Check out AutoRnD.com for an awesome selection of wheels.

Oh, if you are going to replace your tires, I swear that Nitto Neo Gens are the worst ******* tires in the world.

cool thanks for the input. You are helpin me out alot. And i understand you cat bein your little buddy. I have 2 ferrets, and they are my buddies. But i'll check out those sites, and start savin up money.

Hey pluto16, i'm talkin to a muffler shop right now, seeing how much it'll cost me to get a custom exauhst made. They say round 200 for catback. I want a turbo back though. Stock down pipe is small.

We have a ferret. It stinks. Can't wait until I get my chinchilla. Welcome to the forums bro.

You won't get a turbo back from a muffler shop, no way. Too much fabrication. I got a quote for a J-Pipe (what you see from under the car) back with an HKS muffler (that I provided) when I first got my MSP for $400. If you want a turbo back you need to look up Cork Sport, GHL, or Mental Addiction's setups.

I dont know what to do, at first i couldn't find a damn exhaust for the MSP, and now there are so many. The only thing bout the ********** set up is it all looks like slide together kind of exhaust. I had a header like that for my eclipse, and it was nothing but problems. I had leaks out the ying yang. So i kinda don't trust those slide together pipes. Do you have that kit. If not who does, and are they havin any problems from it.

another option for an exhaust is the 2.5 or 3in from Apexr1.com . They also have 2.5 and 3in catless or catted downpipes
