Hen Endurance

The Endurance line is similar in appearance to the lighting used in Endurance motor sports such as the ALMS and 24 Heurs du Mans. We recommend this bulb for fog lamp use only! It is very, very yellow in color.

Best i can do! Photo doesn't do justice, no purple tint in the lights what so ever, they match the HID's perfect.

And as much searching as i done i don't know how to use my camera properly or post full size photos on the forum and my door is not hitting off the other house either lol

I have no idea why it looks off, if you look at them in person they match the HID's perfect just not as bright

Another solid option that I'm considering in the spring is the 35w HID kits from RPM. For $99 bucks you can pick up a set with lifetime warranty. Not sure if I wanna go yellow fogs or color match everything this time. I had yellow Luminics bulbs on my Protege, but I've upgraded everything to cool white LEDs on the MS6.

I ordered the Hoen colormatched for now. I'm gonna upgrade to 8k lows & fogs in the spring, so these are temporary, but useful for now. Different car, different look for me.

Drover, those look good. I think if I had a black car I'd get the HID match for sure. For some reason on my white I like the yellows more though.

To get decent night shots, there are a few things you can try. The tripod advice is great (which I didn't follow sometimes, obviously). Turning off the flash is also key, and if you have control over the length of exposure, set it for anywhere from 1/2 second to like 3 seconds to see which looks best. I think this is the "Tv" (shutter speed priority) setting on my Canon Powershot. This lets the camera expose the image longer, and is how you get the subject to show up brighter... but when you have headlights on you have to be careful not to overexpose. Sometimes taking the shot from off to the side, out of the beams works much better. The ones of my car and the Celica were taken by a buddy with his DSLR, It has a little more control than the simple steps above, but you can still get good ones with a basic camera that has a few controls on it.

"Upgrading to 8000K" not so much an upgrade.
Remember, the "K" here is light wave temp in Kelvin, not brightness!

Kelvin temp is not the amount of light that a capsule makes, lumens is the amount of light a capsule makes, 4300K produces the brightest light, at 3200lumens, 6000K produces 2500 lumens, 8000K produces 1700 lumens, 10000K well you might as well have candles in the headlights as they produce around 900-1200 lumens. Standard old halogens produce about 1500-1700 lumens. Kelvin temp is light wave temp not output.

More is not better, and often it is worse.

Higher up in blue and purple means less visible light. lower back in the yellow and white means more visible light. Dont fool yourself, yellow light is NOT BAD, it is GOOD. Most 4300K capsules are right on the edge of YELLOW/WHITE, NOT BLUE/PURPLE.
People thnk they are better becuase they are uneducated about HID technology and they just think the colors are Pretty!

Higher kelvin temp also produces more glare no matter how good the headlamp is. Even with HID headlamps, a 6000K++++ capsule will produce glare.

Also, FWIW & IMHO- when I see purple headlights (8000K), I think RICE.

8000k give off plenty of light, anything above 10k is really bad. The light output decreases as the temperature increases. 8k is a nice light blue shade.

I'm just sayin that if you want more useable light, 8000K isn't really an upgrade, it's a color change and by the math, a loss of total lumens or useable light on the road. There is a ton of info on the interweb to back this up.

Now, I won't beat on this anymore. There will be folks who are just as happy to swear they saw God with their 12,000K bulbs. I'm happy with the math, and what I've seen with my own eyes. I'm sure you feel the same way, and I've read enough of your posts to not worry too much about you.

The skinny:

4300K=3200lumens
6000K=2500 lumens
8000K=1700 lumens

3000K - Yellow
3000K - Golden
4000K - White w/Yellow
5000K - Pure White
6000K - White w/Blue
7000K - Light Blue
8000K - Sky Blue
10000K - Ultra Blue
12000K - Blue-Purple
15000K - Purple

Maximum Light Output and Visibility: 4000K or 5000K
Balance of Style and Light Output: 6000K or 8000K
Maximum Color Output: 10000K or 12000K or 15000K

Ti, you've got a ton of great info there, and I've been in the same position you are pointing out the effects of modifying HID bulbs in a car. You are totally correct, the only thing I could wonder is if the different bulb manufacturers and if the light outputs remain relatively constant across the board.

It's been a while since I looked into upgrading the HIDs, but I see now that going from the factory 4300k (or 4500k) to an 8k setup is almost a 50% drop in output...I'm not sure I want to go that way. Going with a 6k setup is a much more feasible setup without messing up the lights. Or I could just buy a set of 4300k fogs and match the stock headlamps...

Options...lots of time to decide.

Very sweet set of specs there-
I suppose I should admit my info has a few years on it too-
from my light shopping for my GTI, gosh, maybe 5 years ago.......

I guess in the end it's the same old rules that apply
Get a good product from a reputable source that's known for manufacturing quality.

It was the stupid coating that was put on the bulbs to change color that dropped the useable output so bad.

Based on the output numbers you've posted I can only assume the technology has changed rather substantially for the high quality bulbs.

Sorry I couldn't get the chart to fit in there properly. I'd love to know what the stock light output is of the lowbeams and fogs. Then I'd probably try and match the new ones as close or higher than stock. The bluer headlights are simply a cosmetic thing, but I like being able to make my light signature a little different than stock...I think its the engineer in me.

I got my Hoen colormatched bulbs in the mail today. Extremely quick service, I got the shipping confirmation last night and they showed up today. I'm hoping to put them in tomorrow night and snap some pictures.

For those of you who've installed fogs, any special procedures/advice for installing them (aside from the obvious of course)?

Take the Horn off on the passenger side, gives much more room so you don't scrape your hands up.

Yeah, the horn is easy to remove and reattach, and it makes the job a lot easier. Otherwise, just the usual, be careful and don't touch the bulbs! (and make sure you get some good pics for us)
