CX-9: Mazda's family-hauling midsize crossover will be redesigned for the 2017 model year and will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016. The CX-9's new sheet metal will reflect the kodo design language used in recent Mazda redesigns. The V-6 engine powering the current CX-9 will be replaced by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder from Mazda's Skyactiv portfolio.

Does this mean they're getting rid of the V6 option entirely? Admittedly, I was never much fan of the Duratec engines Mazda was using as their V6 of choice, but I was hoping to see an actual Mazda-engineered V6 to come thereafter, not outright abandon the V6. It's what ultimately turned me away from the new 6, no V6 option = no go for me.

/Nostalgic of the Mazda K-series engines of yesteryears.

Have been saying this long ago. People said it can't be done due to high compression Skyactiv.
Not true. Mazda just need to lower the compression ratio to below 11. Subaru did it. So can Mazda.
A turbo 2.5L can make more than 250hp/250ft-lb of torque, while getting 32+mpg on highway.
I also predict new CX9 will be lighter (<4000lb) and smaller to slot between CX7 and CX9.
Mazda has no other use for a V6 unless they are ready to make a Mazda9 again.

That said, I am with you.
No V6, I might go to other brands. Pilot, MDX, or Highlander.
I need one last big SUV.

That really is a bummer. I can see the 4cyl being ok for your everyday drive to/fro work and daycare and such. But once you load the CX9 up for a road trip, or pack 6 adults in there, that thing is gonna be a dog.

Call me old fashioned, but I still have doubt about the reliability of forced induction engines.
CX7 was a good example.
If you lease vehicles, you probable do not care.
I owned my vehicles for at least 7-8 years before I sold them.
I need them to give me trouble-free 7-8 years and a decent resale value at the end.

I would like to see the new CX-9 with the Ford twin turbo engine or something similar. The CX-9 is a fun car to drive but can be a real dog sometimes.
