New CX-5 Owner, question about wheel wells

Picked up a 2015 CX-5 GT last week and came across something odd when I was installing the rear mud flaps.
I looked up into the wheel wells and noticed what looks like molded felt in the underside of the well. Not plastic like I would think.
So how does this material hold up to rain, snow, mud, etc...?
The front wheel wells seem to be covered with a plastic liner, which makes sense to me.
This is my first Mazda, maybe this is normal.
Just looking for a reality check.
Thanks!

Mazda began using this material in the mid-2000s mainly for its sound deadening qualities. It's held up fine on my wife's '06 Miata. As Kedis pointed out above, many manufacturers use it.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like this is SOP for Mazda now.
Great to have a forum like this to check this stuff out.
Now if they would only fix the iPod interface.....
