New Custom PC

novAKs47, why don't you get an ATI X800 Pro and flash it to an X800XT? Then you'll be the king of the world.

An X800? I think not. They're not worth the money. The 9800XT's will handle any game out there. If I were to go all the way, I'd get an Nvidia 6800GT, which whoops the X800's. Even then, the performance isn't that much better than the old R360 cores. And money is tight, cuz I'm saving up for those D2 coilovers.

Yea, i was wondering where they were getting water cooled seeing as it has a mad huge heat sink with some 80 or 92mm fans. Anyway I built mine and slowly upgrade it. I have a 3.3 due to a 700mhz oc on the 2.6 P4... Thats right biatches! Not that its the fastest, but its gotta be one of the best oc's on this forumn... especially for air cooling and non prescott

Just built mine recently too after a watercooling accident with my other computer.

Thermaltake Tsunami (black)
Athlon 64 3800+ (thermaltake Tower 112 heatsink)
Asus Sli Deluxe
4x512 Corsair xl ram (2225)
74 gb WD Raptor
4x160gb Maxtor hs running raid 5
Evga 6600GT
2x NEC 3520a Dvd Dvd Drives
Antec 480W Neo power supply

Neat looking case, but it looks like the front cover impedes the air intake at the bottom. May not be a problem now, but could ultimately shorten the life of components if really does reduce the airflow.

Damn all you and your nice computers. You guys gave me the bug and over the last couple of days I have been ordering parts like crazy.

my 800mhz overclock doesnt count because its a prescott? its air cooled too!

Well actually, I forgot to include that you can flash a X800 Pro to a X800 XT PE. Which according to this benchmark, is a whole lot better than a 6800GT. It's slightly better then a 6800 Ultra.

Ha! That's what I get for not keeping up recently. lol Still, I can't pay that much for a video card, no matter how kick-ass it is. Cuz in 1-2 years, it'll be really old and cost half as much.

Yeah tell me about it. I'm just waiting for my brother to upgrade his computer again and I can claim all his old components.

Yea prescotts dont count... they OC too easily... my friend has a 4.6 ghz off of a 1ghz oc with air cooling

A bit off-topic...One of these days I'd like to build a gaming rig for the 1st time...what level of experience do you need to successfully build your own system...If there was a tricky part what would that be? I've installed a few cd/dvd drives and ram sticks in my day but never built a whole system....

not hard if you have enough knowledge of all the parts of a computer. Any problems will come in seating ram, or PCI and AGP cards correctly.

other than that its up to the best components for you. select wisely and don't forget that static is the enemy.

you'll find yourself doing it every time you want/need a new computer.. its just so much cheaper and better than buying one.

will post pic later...built this in 02

Is this the VIVO version and is it the AGP? If so, then you can mod it to a ATI Radeon X800 Platinum Edition.

The "tricky" part would be making sure that all your components match up correctly, and finding out what's best for gaming. Just take your time, and RESEARCH. Tomshardware.com is good place to go for hardware reviews. Some motherboards are great for gaming, and some are to be avoided as if they're diseased. Also, some motherboard/video card combinations won't work right, if at all(pretty rare, but worth looking into). For gaming though, go for the nForce chipset motherboards. Avoid the VIA and SiS chipsets. Especially the VIA's, they've been going to hell the last 2 yrs. Asus(nForce boards ONLY), and Abit motherboards are my two top picks. As for power supplies, Enermax all the way. They have the best fan designs, and they put out constant power, with minimal to zero fluctuations(as in a constant 12.22volts to the cpu). If your're going to build an air-cooled system, I recommend Swiftech heatsinks(for the cpu), with your choice of fan. They cost, but they're worth every penny. www.swiftnets.com I've got the MCX462-V, and some arctic silver 5 grease, and an Enermax 92mm adjustable fan, and it works GREAT, even on really hot days(no A/C in the house). If you ever have any gaming rig questions, let me know. Oh, and one more thing. Building pc's can be just as addicting as building up your car. :D
