new car

well, my girlfriend's dad recently bought back a 94 mazda 626 from someone who originally bought it from him. he got the car from texas off ebay, fixed it up, and sold it to this guy. well, the guy was having some overheating problems one night, and he added some coolant. he didnt bother to look around and as a result, didnt notice that the serp. belt had come off the engine. it overheated and he couldnt get the car started again. her dad brought the car back to his place on a truck and has had it parked for a while. he turned it over a few days later and it wouldnt start. i havent looked at the car much, but i like the looks of it. it's a 5 spd with the 2.0L engine. her dad offered it to me for free if i got a new engine for it. first though, i would like to do some of my own tests on it to see exactly what it needs. i am going to drain the oil, flush the coolant, and change the tranny fluid first to see if there is any coolant in the oil and to see if there's any shavings in the tranny or the oil pan. i have a few questions. first, if anyone has any ideas or has encountered a similar problem, it would come in handy definitely. second, is the drain plug in these cars magnetic? i would like to know this so i can determine how to check the pan for shavings.

hopefully it isnt a big deal and the most i'll need is some work done on the cylinder head, but if it comes down to it, i wouldnt mind getting a full engine rebuild simply because the rest of the car is in really good shape. if you guys would like pics, just let me know and i will go take some and put them up for you. thanks ahead of time for your help!

thanks! well, no i dont have any pics, i keep forgetting, i will try to get some in the next coupla nights, one of these nights i'll be back at my girlfriend's house. in any case, we are counting on it being a warped head, and just from looking at it ourselves, that's what it seems to be. brought it to a machine shop on saturday, and they're going to look at it on monday (tomorrow). if that's the case, then yay! if not (which i doubt) then boo. as it is now though, i'm at a standstill until i hear from the machine shop. in the meantime though, im going to clean up the engine bay (it's been sitting for over a year, and the kid that messed the car up left the battery in, so it's kinda ugly in there) i will try to post some pics asap. thanks for any help guys!

Good find. Sounds like the head might have gotten tweaked a little. The FS-DE motor is really simple to rebuild. Good luck with it. The automatic transmissions from that year were horrible, but you should have no problem with the manual. A lot of the modifications for the 3rd Gen Proteges will work on your 626 since the motors and transmissions were almost entirely identical.

well, bad news. the head was warped .016. no good, and it would be roughly 350-400 to rebend and shave the head plus valve job and labor. i'm just going to wait on it and see what else comes along. if i can find an engine for around that same price, i might pick it up. i'll pay maybe about 50, there are a few on ebay too...not sure, but my car tonight lost one of the rear shocks and ripped the s*** outta my right rear tire, so i've got a job to do tomorrow. in any case, if anyone has any leads on an engine, please let me kno2...

duluth, MN. if it's going to be better, i might just go with the rebuilt head, but there are some engines out there i've seen for about 550. if that were the case, i'd just go there. not sure yet though...
