new car maybe

1. msp costs way more. i get ford z-plan pricing (even on limited production svt vehicles) but the mazda dealer doesn't want to seem to help me out here.

2. misc problems. i've had my share of car trouble the last six months, and i don't really want to deal with 'the clunk', leaky BOVs, stalling etc. but then again, another focus may give me trouble too.

3. TURBO!! turbos are the sex, and the bov noise puts a big grin on my face. (i can see it now, crusing down the strip... *vroom* *pfft* *ladies look and wave*)

4. fun to drive. as much as i hate the damn focus when it's in the shop, i love it when it's on the road. driving is pure bliss. i would really hope the msp leaves me feeling the same.

5. transmission. from what i hear, the transmission is the weak point in the car. i highly doubt i'd mod it enough to reach that point, but i worry about that kind of s***.

6. quality/reliability. mazdas have awesome reliability and everything looks very high quality. the svt is missing that refinement.

7. insurance costs. i hear it's high with the msp. my svt isn't too bad.

if i get some cash back from ford, i'll probably slam that down towards a msp to lower the payments a little. but i'd still love all of your opinions.

i also think it's rather funny... all the people on focaljet love the msp, and a lot of people here are like '**** the svtf!'
cheers (drinks)

1. It sure does
2. Aviod both cars as the MSP seems to be giving a 50% failure rate with problems. You forgot squeeky front bushings and pressure cracked windshiled. Some are fine and others have the stalling issue mazda can't even find.
3. women would prefer a 2 year old 328i.
4. Nothing for less then twice the price can touch a mazda for fun to drive.
5. The tranny is definitly the weak point and the primary reason the Mazda 626s drive train was scraped for the new Mazda 6 engines, the old couldn't take the power. I assume the Mazda 3 will also have a new tranny.
6. This is ficticous. Read any reports on reliabilty and mazda doesn't actualy do very well. Not as bad as Ford though. You want reliabilty the best is Toyota/ Lexus and Acura/Honda. NIssan does well too except for the terrible tranny problems in the V-specs.
7. If the MSP is like the MP3 then the insurance company might just see it as a regular Protege. Thats what mine is considered.

I like Mazda and love my MP3 but the with all the garbage the people on this board are having there is no way in hell I would even consider and MSP. Maybe if my local Mazda service centers weren't so bad I would but I know they are morons.

I'd suggest looking into other options.

Yeah try a 450W stero and badass handling. The damn frame is seam welded. aftermarket Springs, shocks, swaybars, wheels, stronger driveshafts, stronger clutch, better brakes, ect. come on now!

238 watts at best!
The deck is 22x4 and the sub amp is 150x1. Of coarse the sub amp is rated at 14.4 volts which you won't see in the MSP once bass stricks unless you have swapped the alternator, so you'll only get a usuable 100 watts from it.

i did a bit of searching, but couldn't find exactly what i'm looking for, so bare with me here.

i currently own an 02 svt focus that's spent 26 days in the shop since december. needless to say, i'll be getting rid of this car soon. and if ford treats me right, i'll be getting back some cash and looking for a new car. has anyone spent a good amount of time in both the svt and the msp? how do they compare? (haven't had a chance to drive msp yet) i would really hope the seating position is better...

I like the seating position in the MSP. I don't believe it is as tall as in the Focus.

i'm a bit on the fence on weather to get an msp or another svt focus. the following are factors i'm considering.

1. msp costs way more. i get ford z-plan pricing (even on limited production svt vehicles) but the mazda dealer doesn't want to seem to help me out here.

Wasn't a factor for me here. In Canada the SVT costs more than the MSP.

2. misc problems. i've had my share of car trouble the last six months, and i don't really want to deal with 'the clunk', leaky BOVs, stalling etc. but then again, another focus may give me trouble too.

The clunk shouldn't be a problem in Vegas. It seems to affect cars in cold/wet climates. From my visits to the Vegas, I know it is neither. :)
Leaky BOV's seem to be a fairly isolated problem. Same with stalling. Every new car has its problems.

3. TURBO!! turbos are the sex, and the bov noise puts a big grin on my face. (i can see it now, crusing down the strip... *vroom* *pfft* *ladies look and wave*)

Actually, with the stock BOV, its more like *vroom* *gobble gobble gobble*. :D

4. fun to drive. as much as i hate the damn focus when it's in the shop, i love it when it's on the road. driving is pure bliss. i would really hope the msp leaves me feeling the same.

Both cars put a big silly grin on your face.

5. transmission. from what i hear, the transmission is the weak point in the car. i highly doubt i'd mod it enough to reach that point, but i worry about that kind of s***.

Its not the strongest unit in the world, but not too bad. I'm not interested in modding for power, so it doesn't concern me. Don't accelerate hard across broken pavement and it should do you fine for years.

6. quality/reliability. mazdas have awesome reliability and everything looks very high quality. the svt is missing that refinement.

Despite what is posted above, I *never* had a problem with my old RX-7 or my old MX-6.

7. insurance costs. i hear it's high with the msp. my svt isn't too bad.

The MSP was less than the SVT for me. Its a 4-door remember. Also, many insurance companies only price it very slightly higher than a Protege ES.

if i get some cash back from ford, i'll probably slam that down towards a msp to lower the payments a little. but i'd still love all of your opinions.

Hey, and we love that you love our opinions. :)

Lots of brand snobs here (I'm glad you didn't post about the SRT-4...) :p
I love the Focus SVT. Best hot hatch there is right now.

The Focus SVT, is generally a good car to mod...IF you don't get one that'll break down on you every day or so...but that seems to be harder and harder to find.

The MSP platform isn't the best if you wanna be putting mad power to the wheels 220-240 whp is the max for the tranny. Personally I probally wouldn't do that much more for a street
FWD car...you'd get too much traction issues.

The Platform was made to handle...true if you comare the car to a celica, or an RSX, even the focus, those platforms can be made to handle better than a MSP ever will...but most likely you're not gonna spend the money to do that.

The Sound system is decent (comming from an audiophile) I just don't like kenwood stuff...just had too much bad experience.

If you're planning to heavily modify your car, I'd ask for a 2003 SVT, just because most of the reliability issues are probally sorted out, and if you're just looking for raw performance, the Focus Chassis (being smaller) can be made to handle better than the MSP chassis, and the engine/tranny can hold alot more power.

But unless if you're willing to dump tons of money into modding, I'd try to get the MSP if I could over the SVT.

Funny...in canada the SVT is expensive...in the states it's cheap :/

Car pricing in Canada is pretty messed up. Most people would think it was just a straight currency conversion, but it's not - every manufacturer has a different "multiplier" that they apply to their cars (US price multiplied by a factor ranging from 1.1 --> 1.5).
I'll give you a few examples just for fun, because our car pricing seems to be surprising to you U.S. folk sometimes.

Subaru WRX: $34995
Toyota Celica GTS: $33245
Acura RSX Type S: $31000
Mini Cooper S: $29950
Hyundai Tiburon GS-R: $28795
Ford Focus SVT (5-door): $27995
Ford Focus SVT (3-door): $27495
Mazdaspeed Protege: $26995
VW Golf GTi: $26360
Nissan Sentra Spec V: $21998

IMHO, the Spec V and the Mazdaspeed are the best automotive bargains in Canada. The Celica GTS is grossly overpriced. And if the WRX was priced on part with the RSX Type S, I would get it over the Mazdaspeed (we get some mean winters here!)

did u say fucus? sorry had to go there..(woowoo)

Ok MSP VS SVT...her is my opinion

1) Autoway dealerships suck....all of them...
2)SVT Focus(last year lookin at it). Dealer told me we dont test drive cars.
3)Gets treated like s*** at all Found On Road Dead dealerships in the Pinellas county area.
4)Mazda dealership i give props to first time test drivin the MSP the dealer tossed me the keys and said go have fun!:)
5)OK SVT 5 door....right.....yea...um...no comment
6)Turbo...mmmmm:D
7)ok one plus i do like about the SVT 6 speed.
8)i have heard alot of problems about the SVT.
9)The time i have spent on this board, i have learned less warrenty issues then with the Honda SI, and the SVT. That is a big plus on my part that means its not in the shop that offten and more bein played with!
10)Did i say Autoway sucks?

i hope i dont get bashed for my oppinions but hey if i do the saturn type r OWN3DS U!!!!LOL!(owned):)
