last year when I was looking for a truck I found one on long island. I was ready to roll. Got it added to my insurance, got my own financing, took the ferry over to look at and buy the truck with check in hand. But I get there and there are a few minor issues with it.....curbed wheels, improperly installed tonneau which had led to some scrapes and small rust spots, dented read bumper, had been smoked in.....and I was a little ticked off that they had not disclosed any of this to me when I spoke with them on the phone about it so I asked them to do a little better on the price...like hundreds of dollars off maybe? seriously...hundreds...is that so much? And the sales girl who was working with me (obviously a rookie) said a number of times that the price (which was admittedly decent) was very firm and they would not move at all. Finally I got her to go in and give them an offer that was like 500 dollars off of the asking price so she did and came back out and said they couldnt do it.
We had taken it for a test drive and everything so I told her I was going (with my dad and my friend) to grab some lunch and we would think about it. Went to lunch and decided that more than the problems with the truck, their inability to negotiate AT ALL really bothered me. After all this was in october 08...when their company (Ford) was getting bailout money, no one was buying cars, especially not gas guzzlers, and nooo one could find financing, and I was in their showroom with a bank check made out to them.
So we just left after lunch and started driving home. I called the dealership but she was "with a customer" and they asked if I wanted to leave a message. I said yea, you can just let her know that chris called about the Harley Davidson truck and I am gonna pass on it". I thought surely when this person heard that a deal on an expensive truck was slipping away they woudl be like "oh, hang on a minute" and get someone to try to keep me interested....but nope...the guy goes "ok, ill let her know".
And then she calls me half an hour later on my cell asking what happened. I told her I wasnt happy with their inability to talk about the price at all. She made a few nasty remarks about how I didnt even go back to the dealership and I was like, why would I go back? You couldnt come down on the price, i asked you multiple times, you checked....nothing happening. I already looked at it and test drove it...what am I missing?
They still had that truck on their lot like 2-3 months later and I found another one in better shape with fewer miles that I wound up buying. Had some issues with the dealership that wound up selling me my truck but a better experience overall.
