Nelson Ledges Track Day June 11, 2011

I'm going to be changing my oil myself before Nelson's ledges this Sunday (I'm just about nearing my change interval). I normally go to Montrose Mazda because they do it for $20, but due to my work schedule (8-5, M-F), they aren't open late enough for me to get there from Akron after work. Also, they don't have any openings on this Saturday.

So my question is, should I use oil with a different viscosity for the higher engine temperatures since I'll be tracking it this Sunday? What would you guys suggest? Or should I just stick with the recommended 5w30 because it wouldn't make much of a difference for the 1 track day?

Also, what synthetic oil do you guys use?

Thanks!

Haha nice Lauri. I was looking at that or Penzoil Platinum. I've never changed the oil myself in this car (basically my first high performance car) and I used Mobile 1 in my Mazda 6 because it was cheap lol. So I don't have any oil experience yet.

the car says 5w-20 but i used 5w-30 while I used redline and during mid ohio. I switched back to 5w-20 when i switched to castrol. the pressure is a little lower and overall the temps are pretty much the same. then again, there was 1 time when turning the AC on\off gave me a difference of 13 degrees for oil and water temp... it lasted for like 15 min... so weird

I've seen some topics about using 5w40 (5w30 is recommended by Mazda) to prevent/fix the smoking turbo issue for the 2.3 DISI. I'll have to ask Chipmunk what he uses but have you heard about this?

I'll probably just use 5w30 for now since I probably won't even notice a difference on the track. It's not like I'll be running an endurance race, just 20 minute sessions lol.

Thanks for the advice

Evan, get Castrol Edge 5w-30, make sure it is the Edge Titanium...........

I'll pick some up on my way home from work. Advance Auto Parts has a deal for 5 single quarts of oil and a filter for $32. I already got a filter at Park Mazda when I went in to get the Filter wrench (which they have to order so I didn't bother) and got an oil filter for $7 and a new washer too. The washer was $1!!! What a rip off haha!
