Needing new brakes

My 04 MS3 5dr is ready for some brakes. I am getting sqweaking in reverse when I hit the brakes. Any recommendations on someone around Charlotte NC that would be good to take it to? Price??? I don't race mine but I drive it aggressively to and from work. ;)

I'm not sure about this but mine has done this since the day I brought it home. I think it occurs in reverse. How many miles do you have?

63k. Also I heard a slight grinding noise when braking only when I was turning left. Doesn't happen all the time though.

First off, you do not have an MS3??? Second I slapped "green stuff" brake pads on my 04 M3 on all four wheels and they were great. I noticed a nice difference in stopping power and almost no brake dust at all.

Can the rotors be turned? Some genius at Goodyear told me I would probably need new rotors when I put the pads on. That true? Where do I get the green stuff pads from? Are those the best value?

Yes rotors should be turned every time pads are changed. If rotors look good no need to change them. Especially if this is the first time you are changing pads.

I got my ebc greenstuff off a website I can't remember. But I think I paid like 140 for both sets front and back. And thats back in 04. I just checked carstuff.com and they have the front for your car for $45. Check it out...

I am just waiting for the greenstuff for my MS3.

I found my Green Stuff pads for my MSP at www.vividracing.com. I don't know if they've got em for your 3 but you can check and see.

Ok so I took it in this weekend and the shop says I dont need brakes they said I must have a "barb" or something scrubbing on the pads but there is plenty of pad left. When I braked hard this morning I heard a slight scrub then when I got out and looked at the rotor there is a line on it when something is scrubbing it and it smelled like the E brake is sticking. What should I do?

Ok, first, the e-brake only operates on the rear brake (usually driver's side.)
Second, it may not be the e-brake. While I'm not very well versed (yet) on how the 3's calipers are assembled, it could easily be that they need to be thoroughly scrubbed and lubed. There aren't any return springs like in drum brakes, so the pads just float in the assembly--the outer pad acts like a backing plate, and the piston pushes against the inner pad....if they can't return to their "home" position, you get unnecessary wear & noise.
Third, AT/MT has nothing to do with brakes...

As for pads, Hawk comes highly recommended from autoX circles (the EBC pads got the  )

I was reffering to the e-brake. If this car is AT then there should be no reason to use the e-brake. Therefore the e-brake would not be the cause.

I don't know exactly how the MS3 front brakes are assembled but I do know the MS3's front brakes are different from the regular 3's fronts. They kinda look like the Mazda 6's (judging from a picture in the "caliper" thread). If so, there are shims that the pads sit on. The 6 has tabs on the outside of the shims to pull them off the rotor when the brake is released.

I had a problem, just like you're describing, with my 6 in that the tabs broke off of the shims on one side and there was nothing to pull it back off the rotor and it wore a small groove in the rotor, along with making some noise. If that is the case have the shims replaced. If there are no shims (thought I could see some in the picture) then disregard what I said--I know nothing!(uhm) Just trying to help out.

I'm confused?

What kind of car do you have and what exactly is the problem? If there is a squeeling sound while you are driving it then a "barb" might be a problem. Jack the car up and start turning each wheel by hand - if there is a griding or screaching sound you might have a problem with a stuck pad, barb, bent indicator tab, or even a bent heat shield. If it only squeels while you are stopping - then you might just need some synthetic grease on the backing plates of the brakes. If it squeals when you are just backing up - you need grease - or - don't back up. How many miles do you have on this set of pads?

If you don't drive spiritedly - then I suggest Mazda OEM stock Semi-metalic pads. If you drive like you stole it - then Hawk pads first, ebc green stuff second. Either way - new pads = new rotors or have them turned.

The Mazdaspeed brakes do not have any wear indicator tabs on them (front or back). You will need to do a visual inspects every so often.

Cheers!

The car only does it when I am coming to a rolling stop and applying the brake. I get a squealing noise when I back out of my driveway which is a steep incline. When I am stopping I don't hear any noise until the car is almost completely stopped and then I hear the scrubbing noise coming from the rear passenger side brake. There is a line on the rotor so something is sticking out on the pads I would think.
