need some cam info

No I just got them today and checked out the codes. THey are sitting in a box ready to be shipped back!

do you have a micrometer? you could always measure the height of the cams (ie from the top of the lobe to the other side) and then you'll be able to figure out what lift they have and then we should be able to work out what spec the are...

No but I can ask my friend if he has one. It is still shady to say the parts are one thing when they are not and the code was knowingly removed to avoid identfication of what is really was.

i reckon! i've always been a little ify about shaneracing because they advertise mazdaspeed instead of j-spec intake cams - there is no such thing.

yeah get your friend to measure them. they should be 1.724" high for the j-spec intake cam. i dont know what the mazdaspeed exhaust cam should be

i bought the blanks through mitch at protege5online.com.

i cant remember what they costs, i think they were like $140usd for both or something like that.

the custom grind has ended up costing me $300aud (about $210usd) because mitch send me two intake cams rather than one of each...

those numbers and what they mean :

lift - that's how many inches (0.351") the cam will lift the valve off the seat if there were no clearance between the cam and the valve. we have about 0.010" clearance, so in theory, the cam will lift the valve 0.341" at it's maximum point.

duration - that's how long in degrees the valve stays open for. the @0.006" is how long the cam is open after the valve has lifted 0.006". @0.050" is how long the cam stays open in degrees once the valve has raised 0.050" off the seat.

does that explain it well???

to put things into perspective, the j-spec cams are :

intake : lift 0.344", duration 210deg @ 0.050"
exhaust (same as stock) : lift 0.323", duration 200deg @ 0.050"

so as you can see the cams i am getting are quite a bit bigger than even the j-spec stuff

Ok twilight- here is the question I have for you- By running the hotter cams that you are putting in, are you expecting a pretty rough idle? I know that with more lift and duration the car would tend to lope a bit at idle, at least in my experience from my old days with honda/acura....

UPDATE: The cams code is fd h9 but had writen on the box fs hs. When I looked threw the plastic it looked like it said that. But the exhaust cam number being removed worries me.

most likely (sorry twilight, this is directed at you but...)...any cams that significantly move the power band up, cause a loss at low rpm and a rough idle, "usually"...idle adjustments can be made (usually only significantly with a completey programmable ecu, with the TB's idle adjustments you can leave the butterfly a little farther open for slightly less roughness but it doens't cure it...) to decrease it...

IMO it is cool though...With poly engine mounts, big cams, and a deep exhuast the sound and vibrations rid the car of the econobox feel and sound at idle...

yeah no that's cool installshield...i would have just written the same...so thanks :)

yeah the idle should be pretty rough. i'm not worried though, i dont care actually. i'll let you know what it feels like when i install them in 2 weekends time. just a note on that as well, this morning i was finally able to install the AWR rear engine mount with the head and intake manifold out, so i'm sure that'll add to the roughness...and with the head being ported as well.......hehehehehehe

but i have to say lucky we have the automatic idle adjuster thingie...that'll help out a lot

xoom xoom - well atleast you know you definately have the j-spec intake cam...and yeah, still worried about the exhaust cam...esp since everyone is staying there are little to no mazdaspeed exhaust cams in america (mitch @ p5online says that)

Here is what they sent me:

"The Mazdaspeed cams both come from Japan
with the word "IN" on them. When Mazdaspeed builds the exhaust cams they
start with intake cams and regrind them into exhaust cams. We have had
customers accidentally put the exhaust cam ( which says "IN take " ) into
the intake cams location which causes lots of problems.
We grind that off to avoid any problems for our customers."

I am guessing that they buy blank mazdaspeed camshafts and grind them because they used to sell blanks.

check that the pins coming out the end are 180 degrees different.

have you had a change to measure the height of the exhaust cam at all?

Actually, to me this sounds legitemate...When I owned my old car, a Probe GT, lots of the 4cylinder FS probe owners where purchasing these cams from corksport....they all complained of a similar thing, getting a pair of intake cams when they ordered the ZE intake and Mazdaspeed exhuast cams...They both had I N on them, but had different colored dots (1 blue, 1 green possibly?)...this is from years ago, and I will look into it more on the probetalk.com forum...try to sit tight with your current cams before you send them back...You may have actually recieved what you wanted all along...

from that, i assume the mazdaspeed exhaust cams are just the intake cams with the pin swapped over for the exhaust side? that would be a really easy fix up for an exhaust cam

The two cames look complety different when place side by side, I couldn't get them to met up at all. I am keeping them as it seems legit and it would be pointless to pay any restocking fee and extra shipping costs.

RE:

XoomXoom,

I recently bought a pair of "MazdaSpeed" Cams from another fellow member that had bought the Cams from SRMotorsport and did the install on Monday, to my surprise when I saw the code (FSD7) on MY and the "Mazdaspeed" exhaust cam I was a bit pissed off!! It's the same s***!! So, to my conclusion, SRMotorsport is advertising the cams as "MazdaSpeed", but in reality it's J-Spec, meaning the same cam that goes into the Japanese version FS-ZE proteges. But the intake cams are fine if they read (FSH9).
